The quick version
Leaks on these cabinets sort cleanly: water inside on the floor of the fresh-food section is a blocked defrost drain, water at the back is the pan or the tubing, and water at the front by the door is usually the seal or the ice-maker line. On an Avanti refrigerator start by finding WHERE, because the where names the fault. The checks below hold for Avanti refrigerators as a class, which is why they are ordered by how often they pay off rather than by model.
What the owner sees
- Water pooling on the floor of the cabinet, under the crisper — On Avanti refrigerators, that is the classic blocked defrost drain: melt water backs up and runs forward instead of down.
- Ice building up under the bottom drawer or on the freezer floor — On Avanti refrigerators generally, a sheet of ice in the base is the same fault as a pool, caught in a colder compartment.
- Water on the floor at the back of the machine — Across the range, back-of-cabinet water means the path got that far and then failed — pan, tube or a tilted machine.
- Droplets on the inside of the rear wall — On Avanti refrigerators generally, sweating on the liner is usually humidity and door openings, not a fault.
- NEAR MISS — water only when the ice maker cycles — That is the fill line or the mould, and the ice-production page covers it in the right order.
What usually causes it, in order
- A blocked defrost drain — It leads because every cabinet makes defrost water daily, so the drain is the one part of the water path that is always working.
- A drain pan that has overflowed or shifted — The pan under the cabinet is meant to evaporate defrost melt, and a pan knocked out of position spills instead. That is its position on Avanti refrigerators as a class.
- A perished or disconnected drain tube — It comes here because you have to get behind and under the machine to see it, which is past most owners.
Where to start, and what follows
- Find the highest point the water reaches — Whichever Avanti refrigerator you have, water runs down, so the top of the wet trail is nearest the fault — that single observation names the cause.
- Check the cabinet is level, front to back especially — A spirit level on the top and a spanner on the feet is the whole job.
- Put kitchen paper down and find the highest wet point — On Avanti refrigerators generally, water runs downhill, so the top of the trail is closest to the source.
The owner procedure, step by step
- Dry everything and map where the water returns first — Kitchen paper at the likely points and a few hours of patience beats guessing.
Tools: kitchen paperAbout 20 min
- Clear the defrost drain with warm water and a soft flush — Warm water down the drain hole, gently, until it runs away freely. No wire, no sharp tools.
Tools: warm water, turkey baster or syringeAbout 25 min
- Isolate the water supply if the machine has one, and watch — This separates condensate from a fill-line leak without opening anything.
About 15 min
- STOP HERE if water and live terminals are in the same space — A valve, a defrost heater or a wet control board is a service call — switch off and leave it.
Before you begin
Safety
Isolate the refrigerator at the plug or the breaker and close any water supply before touching a fitting; a capacitor can stay charged after the power is off. Clear a drain with warm water and time, never with a metal tool — the liner is thin and a puncture is not repairable. Leave every switch and sensor as fitted.
When this stops being an owner job
Owner territory is the channel, the pan, the seal, the levelling and the visible connections. Beyond that, call. Call the same day if water is anywhere near a socket or the wiring, because at that point this is an electrical hazard rather than a plumbing one.

What is out of scope here
This page is about water leak on Avanti refrigerators and not about the faults next to it. Then the leak is a symptom of a defrost or airflow fault. Read the cooling-failure page for your model line first. A machine that is off is simply defrosting. Empty it, dry it and judge it once it has been running again for a day. It also stops short of installation work, parts pricing and anything that needs a meter behind a panel, because that is a technician’s ground rather than an owner’s.
