Not Cooling or Not Freezing: the short answer
A cabinet that runs but will not hold temperature is almost always losing the fight at the condenser or the airflow path, not at the compressor. The compressor failing outright is the rarest of the common causes and the only one that is not an owner check. This page takes the same fault from the other end: the machine switched off, cold and opened up, where the mechanical, installation and wear causes are found. It is the companion to the running-machine page, and a reader who has not yet run the machine should start there.
What you are seeing
- the cabinet is running — you can hear or feel the compressor — but the food compartment is warm
- the freezer side is still cold while the fresh-food side is not
- the cabinet runs continuously and never cycles off
- the outside of the cabinet, near the hinge column or under the toe grille, is unusually warm
- condensation or a slick film on interior surfaces that used to stay dry
- Not this fault: the cabinet is completely silent and the interior light is out too — Means: this is a power or start fault, not a cooling fault — Points to: avanti-refrigerator-wont-start
- Not this fault: it cools, but there is water pooling under the crisper — Means: a blocked defrost drain, which is a leak fault — Points to: avanti-refrigerator-water-leak
- Not this fault: it cools everywhere except that the ice maker has stopped — Means: an ice-production fault with its own separate causes — Points to: avanti-refrigerator-ice-production
Ranked for Avanti refrigerators
- Insufficient clearance or a hot installed location — Why here: a cabinet that cannot breathe recirculates its own exhaust, so the sealed system is fighting a raised ambient that no adjustment will fix
- Blocked or restricted internal airflow — Why here: cold air has to circulate; a carton pushed against the return vent or a chest packed to the lid starves the compartment that the vent feeds
- Condenser coil fouled with dust, lint or pet hair — Why here: the coil is how the cabinet throws heat away; once it is blanketed, the sealed system cannot reject heat no matter how well it is charged, and the compressor simply runs longer and longer
- Door seal not closing, or a door left ajar by a shelf — Why here: a continuous small air leak loads the cabinet with warm humid air faster than it can remove it, and it never announces itself as a fault
- Condenser fan not turning, or turning slowly — Why here: a stalled fan produces exactly the same symptom as a fouled coil, and a fan that is only dragging is easy to mistake for a working one
- Note: This ordering carries no denominator: no counted component share exists for this brand and appliance, so it is an ordering by cause structure rather than a measured frequency.
Check it in this order
- Insufficient clearance or a hot installed location — Why: It comes first here: a cabinet that cannot breathe recirculates its own exhaust, so the sealed system is fighting a raised ambient that no adjustment will fix.
- Blocked or restricted internal airflow — Why: It comes second here: cold air has to circulate; a carton pushed against the return vent or a chest packed to the lid starves the compartment that the vent feeds.
- Condenser coil fouled with dust, lint or pet hair — Why: It comes third here: the coil is how the cabinet throws heat away; once it is blanketed, the sealed system cannot reject heat no matter how well it is charged, and the compressor simply runs longer and longer.
- Door seal not closing, or a door left ajar by a shelf — Why: It comes fourth here: a continuous small air leak loads the cabinet with warm humid air faster than it can remove it, and it never announces itself as a fault.
- Only then go back to the powered checks — Why: The remaining causes are electrical, thermal or control-side, and the companion page linked below covers that route in the order that suits it.
Owner checks, in order
- Switch the machine off and let it stand until it is cold and safe to handle, then work from the outside of the cabinet inward — this page assumes the machine is not running — Tools: none — Estimated time: ten to fifteen minutes
- Check the machine is level in both directions and that nothing touches it — a cabinet that rocks or leans against a wall produces mechanical symptoms that no part will cure — Tools: spirit level, adjustable spanner — Estimated time: fifteen to twenty minutes
- Pull the toe grille or the rear cover and vacuum the condenser coil until the fins are visibly clean; brush along the fins rather than across them — Tools: vacuum with a crevice tool, soft coil brush, nut driver — Estimated time: twenty to thirty minutes
- With the cabinet running, listen and look for the condenser fan; if it is stopped, unplug and check whether it turns freely by hand or is jammed by debris — Tools: torch — Estimated time: five to ten minutes
- Close the door on a strip of paper at several points around the frame and pull; if it slides out freely anywhere, that stretch of seal is not sealing — Tools: a sheet of paper — Estimated time: five to ten minutes
Before you touch anything
Safety
electrical refrigerant heavy Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. — Constant: unplug-before-service A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 degrees F (4 degrees C) or below. — Constant: fridge-40f A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees F (minus 18 degrees C) or below. — Constant: freezer-0f
Unplug the cabinet before you remove any panel or reach behind the toe grille. The sealed system is under pressure and is not an owner-serviceable circuit: never cut, kink, braze or vent a refrigerant line, and never apply heat anywhere near one. A loaded cabinet is heavy and tips forward easily when it is walked out on its front rollers, so empty it first and pull it straight out with a helper rather than levering it on one corner.
When it stops being an owner job
The cabinet still will not come down to temperature after the condenser is clean, the fan turns and the airflow is clear The compressor is running hot and cycling off after a short run, which points at a start component or an overload Frost forms in a solid slab on one wall while the rest of the cabinet is warm

This is a generalized page. It covers Avanti refrigerators as a class and does not cover any single product family, model or model year: it carries no model-specific part number, no model-specific fault-code table and no figure measured on one particular unit. No family- or model-specific page exists for this brand in this reference yet. When one is published it will go further than this page can, and this page will link down to it. This symptom is covered by two complementary pages. This one takes the machine cold and open and ranks the mechanical, installation and wear causes first; its companion, linked below, takes the same symptom with the machine running and ranks the powered, thermal and control causes first. Read whichever matches the state your machine is in. It covers one symptom only. The brand overview linked below routes to the other problems that turn up on this appliance. Every number on this page is a published safety constant quoted verbatim. No failure rate, component share, reliability score or recall identifier is stated, because none is available for this brand and appliance.
