The short answer for WCDE models
On an Avanti WCDE refrigerator the first question about a leak is whether the water is cold and clean or not, and the second is whether it appears inside the cabinet or on the floor. Those two answers separate a blocked defrost drain from a fill-line fault, and they are the difference between a free fix and a plumber.
What this looks like in use
- Ice building up under the bottom drawer or on the freezer floor — In the WCDE family, melt water freezing where it stands is a drain that blocks and then freezes shut.
- A thin trickle down the inside of the back wall — For WCDE models, follow the water upward: the top of the trail is nearest the cause.
- Damp along the door edge with a dry floor — In the WCDE family, condensation on a cool surface rather than a leak, and on a humid day it means nothing.
- A clean, clear puddle that returns within hours — On WCDE models in particular, fast refilling means a supply line, not condensate — condensate arrives slowly.
- Water at the front, just inside the door — Within the WCDE family, front-edge water with a warm cabinet points at the seal rather than the drain.
- NEAR MISS — water only when the ice maker cycles — That is the fill line or the mould, and the ice-production page covers it in the right order.
What actually fails on WCDE models, in order
- A blocked defrost drain — First and by a wide margin: the drain hole is small, it sits in a cold damp place, and it silts up with food debris and then freezes.
- A drain pan that has overflowed or shifted — It belongs here because it is visible from the front with the plinth off and because seating it is free. On WCDE models it earns that place.
- A spill inside the cabinet that was never the appliance at all — Ranked here because it costs nothing to rule out and because it explains water that appears once and never again.
- A perished or disconnected drain tube — It comes here because you have to get behind and under the machine to see it, which is past most owners. For WCDE models the reasoning is identical.
What to look at first, second, third
- Find the highest point the water reaches — For WCDE models, dry everything, put kitchen paper at likely points and come back: the first sheet to wet tells you where to look.
- Find the defrost drain hole and test that it flows — If the water sits there or backs up, the drain is your fault and clearing it is the repair.
- Run the paper test round the door seal — Check the hinge side first: that is where a gasket takes a set and stops sealing.
- Clear the drain channel at the back of the cabinet — In the WCDE family, warm water and patience; never a metal tool, which splits the liner.

Power off and water off before you start, and dry as you go: a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a wet floor in front of a heavy cabinet is how people get hurt moving it. Two people to walk the machine out, one to hold the door shut. Warm water is the only tool a drain needs.

When to hand it over
Call when the drain refuses to clear, when it clears and refreezes within days, or when water has reached anything electrical. A drain that freezes shut repeatedly is a defrost-circuit fault rather than a blockage, and that is a technician job. So is any leak you cannot trace to a point above the water.
