The short answer for VFR models
Water under an Avanti VFR refrigerator is usually condensate that has lost its way out, not a burst pipe. The defrost drain blocks, the pan overflows or the water finds a path down the back wall instead of into the tray. Trace the water to its highest point before assuming anything is broken.
What owners describe
- Water on the floor at the back of the machine — Looking at VFR models specifically, the evaporating pan has overflowed, cracked, or the drain tube has come out of it.
- Damp along the door edge with a dry floor — Where VFR models are concerned, a dry floor and a damp frame is normal; treat it as a leak only if it puddles.
- Droplets on the inside of the rear wall — On this family, sweating on the liner is usually humidity and door openings, not a fault.
- A clean, clear puddle that returns within hours — On this family, fast refilling means a supply line, not condensate — condensate arrives slowly.
- Ice building up under the bottom drawer or on the freezer floor — On the VFR line, a sheet of ice in the base is the same fault as a pool, caught in a colder compartment.
- NEAR MISS — water only when the ice maker cycles — That is the fill line or the mould, and the ice-production page covers it in the right order.
Ranked causes on the VFR line
- A blocked defrost drain — First and by a wide margin: the drain hole is small, it sits in a cold damp place, and it silts up with food debris and then freezes.
- A cabinet out of level tipping water the wrong way — It is on the list because it is the cheapest cause of all and it is created every time the machine is moved. Nothing in the VFR line changes that order.
- A drain that freezes shut because the defrost system is failing — It ranks below the simple blockage because it is the same symptom with a harder cause, and it needs a technician.
- A perished or disconnected drain tube — Last of the common causes: the tube hardens with age, cracks at the bend, or falls out of the pan when the machine is pushed back. It is ranked the same way on every VFR model.
What to look at first, second, third
- Find the highest point the water reaches — On the VFR line, water runs down, so the top of the wet trail is nearest the fault — that single observation names the cause.
- Look underneath at the evaporating pan — On every VFR model in the table, it should be dry or damp, sitting square, with the drain tube pointing into it.
- Put kitchen paper down and find the highest wet point — On a VFR model, leave the paper for a day rather than watching for a minute.
- Clear the drain channel at the back of the cabinet — On the VFR models listed below, warm water and patience; never a metal tool, which splits the liner.

Power off and water off before you start, and dry as you go: a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a wet floor in front of a heavy cabinet is how people get hurt moving it. Two people to walk the machine out, one to hold the door shut. Warm water is the only tool a drain needs.

When to hand it over
Hand it over once the drain flows, the pan is right, the machine is level and the seal passes the paper test, and water still appears. At that point you are looking at tubing inside the cabinet wall or at the defrost circuit, neither of which is reachable without a teardown. Switch the machine off at the wall if the leak is fast.
