Viking Oven F02: Temperature Sensor Shorted — Low Resistance Reading
F02 on Viking ovens means the temperature sensor reads abnormally low resistance (near-zero), the opposite of F01 (open circuit). The sensor wire is either contacting itself internally or the sensor housing, typically from moisture intrusion or physical damage to the commercial-grade probe.
F02 vs F01: Mirror Failures on the Same Component
- F01: Sensor wire broke (infinite resistance). Most common. Usually from thermal fatigue
- F02: Sensor wire shorted (near-zero resistance). Less common. Often from moisture or physical damage
The same replacement sensor ($35-$65) fixes both codes. Test the sensor: expect 1,080-1,100 ohms at room temperature. Below 200 ohms = shorted. Replace the sensor.

Viking-Specific Considerations
Viking's infrared Gourmet-Glo broiler radiates intense heat that can damage sensor wiring running near the broiler element. If F02 appeared after using the broiler at high settings, inspect the sensor wire routing for heat damage. Melted insulation can create shorts between the sensor wire and chassis.
Diagnosis
- Power off at breaker
- Disconnect the sensor's 2-pin connector at the rear panel
- Measure resistance across sensor wires: 0-200 ohms = shorted sensor. 1,080-1,100 ohms = sensor OK, check wiring
- If sensor is OK, measure from each wire to chassis ground. Any reading = wiring short to ground
