The split matters because the two parts fail in opposite ways. A drifting NTC degrades wash performance and usually throws a code, but it is not a safety hazard. The safety thermostat is a hardware backstop that works independently of the board's software — once it trips, it has done its job and must be replaced, because the disc does not reset.
How the two parts work together#
The NTC sits in the water path near the flow-through heater outlet. Its resistance changes as the water temperature changes, and the board reads that resistance and converts it to a temperature, cycling the heater on and off many times to hold the setpoint. The safety thermostat is a bimetallic disc mounted on or near the heater housing; if the water ever climbs toward roughly 200°F — a stuck heater or a failed NTC letting the board overheat the water — the disc physically opens and kills the heater no matter what the board commands. That two-layer arrangement is what keeps a high-temperature program safe.

Reading the symptoms#
- F01 — the NTC is reporting a temperature that is too high, usually a failed sensor rather than a genuine overheat
- F02 — the NTC is reporting too low, so the board runs the heater but never sees the target
- No heat, no code — the safety thermostat has tripped; the board does not monitor it directly, so nothing is flagged
- Dishes cold — with a tripped safety thermostat the heater gets no power even though the board is commanding heat
- High-temp program aborting — a drifting NTC gives inconsistent readings that make the board bail out of the cycle
Testing before you buy#
The critical step is telling the two apart with a multimeter. Measure the NTC across its two wires: at room temperature it should read roughly 5,000 to 15,000 ohms depending on model. Measure the safety thermostat for continuity: a healthy one is closed, near zero ohms. An open safety thermostat has tripped, and a wildly out-of-range NTC has drifted. Guessing here is the most common and expensive mistake, because an F02 could be the NTC, the heater, or the safety thermostat.

Replacing the parts#
Both live under the base cover, so remove it first (Torx Plus T20).
- NTC thermistor: it is a small cylindrical probe clipped into the water path near the flow-through heater outlet. Unplug the two-wire connector, release the clip, slide the old probe out, and seat the new one so its tip contacts the water path.
- Safety thermostat: it is a small disc on or beside the heater housing with two leads. Photograph the wire positions, release the spring clip or screw, and fit the replacement in the same orientation.
Because the labor is identical, it is often worth replacing both while you are in there — a 15-year-old safety thermostat is cheap insurance. Refit the cover, restore power, and run a full cycle including the high-temperature rinse to confirm the water gets hot. Note that the NTC calibration curve differs between generations, so a G 4000 sensor will feed a G 7000 board the wrong readings — always match the part to your series. Lifespan#
An NTC generally lasts 15 to 20 years, drifting slowly enough that it rarely causes trouble within the machine's life. The safety thermostat has no wear mechanism and effectively lasts indefinitely unless it actually trips or its disc corrodes from moisture, so keep the base area dry to protect the wire connections, and have the NTC checked if wash results decline gradually over the years even without a code.
