What makes this repair a priority on a Miele is where the electronics live. Miele mounts the control board inside the door assembly, and the gasket is engineered as a dual-lip seal to protect it: the inner lip forms the primary watertight seal against the stainless tub rim, while the outer lip channels any escaped moisture down into the base pan instead of letting it reach the board. A worn gasket does not just leave a puddle — it can steer steam toward the control compartment, turning a cheap seal into a board failure that costs many times more.

How the seal is built#

The gasket runs continuously around the perimeter of the tub opening and clips into a molded groove, so it stays put even after being opened and closed thousands of times. At the bottom of the opening it widens into a drip channel: any water that slips past the primary lip during a wash collects there and routes into the base pan, where the waterproof-system float would trigger a shutdown if the volume ever climbed too high. That is why a door leak on a Miele is really a warning about the whole moisture-management system, not just a nuisance.

How to tell the gasket is going#

Run a finger along the seal lip; it should be supple and spring back. Replace the gasket when you notice any of these:

• Water at the base of the door during a cycle — the primary lip has lost compression
• Steam escaping the top or sides of the door, which a sealed Miele should never show
• An F70 waterproof-system code, which a leak into the base pan can trigger through the float switch
• A lip that is flattened, cracked, or hardened, or shows mold that cleaning cannot remove
• Board-related faults appearing on a machine that previously had minor door leaks

Matching the right gasket#

Miele uses model-specific gaskets because tub-opening dimensions vary between generations, and they are not interchangeable:

Order by the exact model and serial number from the rating plate on the left inner edge of the door frame.

Reseating a new gasket#

1. Disconnect the dishwasher at the breaker.
2. Open the door and note how the old gasket sits in the groove.
3. Starting at the bottom, pull the old gasket out evenly so stuck sections do not tear.
4. Clean the groove with a damp cloth and mild detergent, clearing residue, mineral scale, and mold, then check the groove itself for cracks.
5. From the top center, press the new gasket's lip into the groove and work outward in both directions, pressing firmly every few inches.
6. Ease the corners into shape, close the door gently, and confirm the seal compresses evenly.
7. Restore power and run a short cycle while watching the perimeter for any escape.

A plastic trim tool helps seat tight corners without nicking the rubber; no other tools are needed. If the retention groove itself is cracked, stop — that is a tub-level repair for a technician, not a gasket swap.

Lifespan and care#

Miele formulates the seal to survive repeated cycling between 150°F-plus wash temperatures and room temperature, so a gasket commonly lasts 12 to 20 years — far longer than the 5-to-7-year life of ordinary rubber seals. Hard water, aggressive powder detergents, high-temperature programs, mold, and door slamming all shorten it. Wipe the seal after each wash, leave the door ajar so it dries, apply a thin coat of food-grade silicone to the lip once a year, and treat even minor steam escape as a high-priority fix given what the gasket protects.
