Miele Dishwasher F70: Waterproof System Activated — Leak in Base Tray
F70 is Miele's flood protection code, indicating the float switch in the machine's base tray has detected standing water. The Waterproof System (WPS) immediately shuts off the inlet valve, activates the drain pump to evacuate as much water as possible, and locks out normal operation until the cause is identified, repaired, and the base tray is dried out.
Miele's WPS is one of the most comprehensive leak protection systems in any residential dishwasher. It consists of three independent protection layers: the double-walled WPS inlet hose with electrical safety valve at the tap connection, a polystyrene float switch in the base tray that rises with accumulated water and trips a microswitch, and software monitoring that detects unexpected water volume loss (more water entered than can be accounted for by the tub volume and drain cycles).
F70 specifically triggers from the base tray float switch — not from the hose safety valve (which produces F13) or the software volume mismatch (which can produce F12 variants). This means water has physically reached the base tray, confirming an active leak somewhere between the inlet, the tub, and the drain path.
Where Leaks Originate in Miele Dishwashers
The base tray sits beneath the entire machine and collects any water that escapes from the internal water circuit. Identifying the leak source requires tracing the water path and inspecting each potential failure point.
1. Door gasket failure (30%). The silicone door gasket that seals the tub opening against the door inner panel is the most mechanically active seal in the dishwasher — it compresses and releases 2-4 times per day as the door opens and closes. Over 10-15 years, the silicone loses elasticity, develops compression set (permanent deformation), or accumulates mineral deposits that prevent a clean seal. Water escapes at the door/tub interface during wash cycles, runs down the front of the tub, and drips into the base tray.
Detection: open the door after F70 triggers and feel for moisture along the door seal perimeter. Wet spots indicate seal failure zones. Also check for dried mineral stain trails on the inner door panel below the seal line.
2. Spray arm bearing seal leak (20%). Each spray arm mounts on a bearing post that connects to the water distribution manifold inside the tub. The seal around each bearing post prevents pressurized water from leaking past the bearing into the machine base. These seals are rubber O-rings that harden and shrink over time.
Detection: run a short cycle with the door closed. After approximately 5 minutes, open the lower access panel and use a flashlight to look for water dripping from the bearing post area.
3. Circulation pump housing gasket (20%). The joint between the sump and the circulation pump housing uses a rubber gasket that seals against wash pressure. If this gasket deteriorates or was improperly seated during a prior pump service, pressurized wash water leaks into the base tray during every pump operation.
Detection: water appears at the pump housing junction, visible from beneath when the lower panel is removed.
4. Internal hose connection failure (15%). Miele dishwashers use several internal hoses — from inlet valve to tub, from tub to drain pump, from pump to drain outlet. Each connection uses spring clamps. Over years, the rubber hose material at the clamp point compresses and loses its grip, or the clamp itself weakens. A slow drip at any connection eventually accumulates in the base tray.
Detection: trace each hose connection with a dry paper towel. Wet spots indicate the specific connection that is leaking.
5. Tub sidewall crack (5%). The stainless steel tub (on Miele dishwashers) is extremely durable, but concentrated chemical corrosion — from undissolved detergent powder sitting on the tub floor, or from acidic rinse aid dripping on a spot — can eventually pit through the steel. This is rare but occurs on machines over 15 years old with heavy detergent use.
Detection: remove all racks and spray arms, inspect the tub interior with a flashlight looking for discolored spots or pinholes, especially along the bottom corners and near the detergent dispenser outlet area.
6. WPS hose inner jacket leak (10%). The double-walled WPS inlet hose can develop a leak in the inner jacket while the outer jacket remains intact. Water accumulates between the two layers and eventually runs down into the base tray through the hose entry point. This does not always trigger F13 (WPS hose valve) because the electrical safety valve at the tap end may not detect the slow seepage.
Detection: feel the WPS hose along its length — swelling or heaviness indicates water between the jackets.

Clearing F70 After Repair
After identifying and repairing the leak source, the base tray must be dried for F70 to clear:
- Tilt the machine backward slightly (have a helper hold it) and use towels to soak up standing water in the base tray.
- Allow residual moisture to air-dry — this may take 4-8 hours. A fan aimed at the machine base accelerates drying.
- Once the float switch is no longer lifted by water, F70 clears automatically on the next power cycle.
- Run a short test cycle and immediately check the base tray for new water — confirming the leak repair was successful.
Do NOT simply dry the tray without repairing the leak. F70 will return on the next wash cycle.

F70 vs F13
F70 = base tray float switch detected water (leak confirmed inside the machine). F13 = WPS hose electrical safety valve tripped (leak detected in the inlet hose specifically). Both are flood protection codes, but F70 indicates a leak in the machine body while F13 indicates a leak in the supply hose. If both appear simultaneously, the WPS hose inner jacket leaked water into the base tray, tripping both the hose safety valve and the float switch.
