LG Dishwasher Water Inlet Valve Replacement — Solving Fill Problems and IE Errors
The water inlet valve controls water flow into your LG dishwasher. It is an electrically operated solenoid valve — when the control board sends voltage, the solenoid opens and water flows through a screen filter into the tub. When it fails, the dishwasher either will not fill at all (IE error) or will not stop filling (leading to overfill and leaks).
How the LG Inlet Valve Works
The valve body contains one or two solenoid coils (single or dual-inlet designs) and a spring-loaded plunger mechanism. When de-energized, a spring holds the plunger closed and blocks water flow. When the control board applies 120V AC to the coil, the magnetic field lifts the plunger and water passes through.
Each solenoid coil also has a small inlet screen (mesh filter) where the supply hose connects. This screen catches sediment and mineral particles from the water supply. In hard water areas, this screen gradually clogs with calcium deposits, reducing flow rate until the dishwasher cannot fill within the board's timeout window — triggering the IE error.

Symptoms — Valve Failure vs Other Fill Problems
Inlet valve failure:
- IE error code (Inlet Error) — the board timed out waiting for the tub to fill
- No water entering the tub despite the water supply being on
- Valve buzzes but no water flows — the solenoid energizes but the plunger is stuck from mineral deposits
- Dishwasher fills slowly, taking much longer than normal to start washing
- Water continues entering the tub after the cycle ends or when the dishwasher is off — the valve is stuck open (replace immediately to prevent flooding)
Not the inlet valve:
- IE error plus a closed supply valve — check the shutoff valve under the sink first
- IE error plus a kinked supply hose — straighten the hose before condemning the valve
- Float switch tripped — the overfill float switch cuts power to the valve independently of the board

Tools Required
- Phillips #2 — for the bottom access panel
- Adjustable wrench or 3/4 inch wrench — for the water supply line fitting
- Multimeter — to test solenoid coil resistance
- Towels and a small bucket — water spills when disconnecting the supply line
- Needle-nose pliers — for removing the inlet screen if attempting to clean rather than replace
Testing the Inlet Valve
Before replacing, test the solenoid coil. Disconnect power and the water supply. Remove the bottom panel. Locate the valve — it is mounted at the bottom of the tub near where the supply hose enters the dishwasher.
Disconnect the wire harness from the solenoid coil. Set your multimeter to resistance and measure across the coil terminals. Expected reading: 500-1500 ohms. Open (infinite resistance) means the coil is burned out. Very low resistance (under 50 ohms) means a shorted coil. Either reading means replacement.
Also remove the inlet screen with needle-nose pliers and inspect for mineral clogging. A partially clogged screen can be cleaned with vinegar soak — submerge the screen in white vinegar for 30 minutes. If the screen is heavily encrusted, replace the valve (the screen is not sold separately).

Replacement Steps
Disconnect power at the breaker. Shut off the water supply valve under the sink. Disconnect the supply hose from the valve fitting — have a towel and bucket ready for water drainage.
Remove the bottom kick plate. Disconnect the wire harness from the solenoid. Release the internal hose (from valve outlet to tub inlet) using pliers on the spring clamp. Remove the mounting screws (typically 1-2 Phillips screws) holding the valve bracket to the frame.
Install the new valve in reverse order. Tighten the supply line fitting by hand plus a quarter-turn with a wrench — do not overtighten, as this cracks the valve's plastic inlet port. Reconnect the internal hose, wire harness, and kick plate.
Open the supply valve and check for leaks at the fitting before restoring power. Then run a Rinse Only cycle to verify fill operation.
Hard Water Prevention
In Sacramento and Bay Area homes with well water or hard municipal water, the inlet valve screen clogs every 2-3 years. Annual cleaning of the screen extends valve life significantly. Shut off the supply, disconnect the hose, pull the screen out with needle-nose pliers, soak in vinegar, and reinstall. This 15-minute maintenance task can prevent a $25-$75 valve replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions
My LG dishwasher fills slowly but eventually starts. Is the inlet valve bad?
The inlet screen is probably partially clogged with mineral deposits. Remove and clean the screen first. If flow does not improve, the valve's internal passages may be blocked and replacement is needed.
The LG dishwasher keeps filling after the cycle ends. What is wrong?
The valve is stuck open — the plunger is not seating properly due to mineral buildup or mechanical wear. This is a flood risk. Shut off the water supply immediately and replace the valve.
Can hard water damage the inlet valve permanently?
Yes. Mineral deposits build up on the plunger seat and prevent it from sealing fully. The screen can be cleaned, but if deposits have reached the internal plunger mechanism, the valve must be replaced.
