LG Dishwasher bE: When the Control Panel Thinks a Button Is Stuck
bE means a button on the control panel is registering as continuously pressed. The control board detects a closed circuit on one of the keypad membrane traces for longer than the debounce timeout (typically 30-60 seconds), concludes a button is stuck, and locks out the panel to prevent unintended commands.
Why bE Happens
LG dishwasher control panels use a membrane keypad — a thin flexible circuit layer bonded to the inner side of the front panel overlay. Each button position has two conductive traces separated by a small air gap. Pressing the overlay compresses these traces together, completing the circuit. Over time, three things destroy this mechanism:
Moisture infiltration (50% of bE cases): Steam escaping the door seal during the drying phase condenses on the inner control panel surface. On LG models where the control panel sits directly above the door opening (top-control designs like the LDP6810SS), this steam rises straight into the electronics. The moisture creates a conductive bridge across button traces, simulating a button press without physical contact.
Overlay delamination (30%): The adhesive bonding the membrane keypad to the decorative overlay weakens from heat cycling. When the overlay separates, the air gap that normally keeps the traces apart collapses. The membrane rests against both traces permanently at one or more button positions.
Cleaning product residue (15%): Spray cleaners (especially those containing ammonia or citrus solvents) applied to the control panel exterior seep through the overlay edges. The residue is conductive when wet and corrosive when dry — it attacks the silver traces on the membrane, creating both short-term false contacts and permanent trace damage.
Physical button damage (5%): A cracked overlay from impact allows direct water entry into a specific button zone.

Identifying Which Button Is Stuck
The display shows bE but does not identify which button. To narrow it down:
- Kill power at the breaker for 2 minutes
- Restore power. Immediately watch the display as it boots
- If bE appears instantly (within 1-2 seconds), the short is hardware — a trace is permanently bridged
- If the panel briefly works normally then bE appears after 10-30 seconds, moisture is slowly creating a conductive path as condensation forms
With power off, press each button one at a time. A stuck button often feels different — either no click at all (overlay collapsed onto it permanently) or a crunchy feel (dried residue under the overlay).
The Steam Fix (Moisture-Caused bE)
If bE appears primarily after hot wash cycles and clears after the machine cools for several hours:
- Kill breaker power after the wash cycle completes
- Open the door fully and leave it open for 30 minutes to vent steam
- Use a hair dryer on LOW heat across the control panel face — hold 6 inches away, sweep slowly for 3-4 minutes. The goal is to evaporate trapped moisture between the overlay and membrane
- Restore power. If bE clears, the root cause is steam infiltration
Long-term fix: inspect the top edge of the door seal where it meets the tub opening below the control panel. On top-control LG models, a small gap at the upper door seal allows steam to vent upward into the panel cavity. Applying a thin bead of food-grade silicone along the top seal interface reduces steam intrusion without affecting door closure.

Control Panel Replacement
If the membrane is physically damaged (delaminated, corroded traces, cracked overlay), the control panel assembly must be replaced. LG packages the membrane keypad and overlay as a single bonded unit.
- Breaker off. Open the door fully
- Remove the outer door panel screws (along the inner door edges) — typically 8-10 Torx T20 screws
- Carefully separate the outer panel from the inner door. The control panel ribbon cable connects to the main board at the top — note its position and orientation before disconnecting
- The control panel assembly mounts to the outer door panel with screws and clips. Remove and transfer any brackets to the new panel
- Install the new assembly, route the ribbon cable cleanly (no pinch points), and reconnect
- Reassemble the door. Verify all screws are tight — a loose outer panel allows additional moisture entry

bE vs. Other Panel-Related Codes
bE specifically means a button is stuck closed. If the panel is completely unresponsive (no button press registers at all), that is a different failure — typically an open ribbon cable connection or dead main board — and will not show bE.
If the display shows random characters or flickers, suspect a power supply issue on the main board rather than a keypad fault. bE requires a specific, sustained closed-circuit detection on a defined button input.
The Cleaning Product Warning
Never spray cleaning products directly onto the LG dishwasher control panel. Instead, spray onto a soft cloth and wipe. Avoid products with ammonia (Windex), citrus solvents, or abrasive particles. Use a damp microfiber cloth with mild dish soap for routine cleaning. If spray has already been applied and bE appeared, the damage to membrane traces may already be permanent — but drying the panel thoroughly is worth attempting before ordering the replacement.

QuadWash Models and Steam Routing
LG's QuadWash Pro models (LDTH-prefix) generate more internal steam than standard models because of their high-temperature rinse cycles. The increased steam volume means the control panel on these models is exposed to more moisture per cycle. If you own a QuadWash Pro and experience recurring bE after steam dryouts, the long-term fix is the silicone seal modification plus running the heated dry cycle with the door cracked at the end (cancel the cycle during the final dry phase and prop the door open 2 inches).
