GE Dryer Motor Replacement — Diagnosis and Complete Procedure
The drive motor in your GE dryer performs double duty: it rotates the drum via a belt and simultaneously drives the blower wheel. When the motor fails, the dryer is completely non-functional — no tumbling, no airflow, no drying. Given the motor's $110-$280 price tag plus labor, accurate diagnosis before ordering is essential.
How the Motor Fails
Seized bearings — the motor hums loudly but the shaft will not turn. The dryer may trip the breaker. This is the most common motor failure mode. Causes: age, lint infiltration into the bearing cavity, running with a restricted vent (motor overheats).
Burned winding — the motor is silent. No hum, no attempt to start. The motor winding has an open circuit from overheating. Test with a multimeter: disconnect one motor wire and test across the motor terminals — open circuit (OL) confirms a burned winding.
Centrifugal switch failure — the motor starts momentarily and then shuts off, or runs but at the wrong speed. The centrifugal switch inside the motor transitions from the start winding to the run winding once the motor reaches operating speed. If the switch fails, the motor may not start or may not transition to running speed.

Before Condemning the Motor
- Belt — a broken belt produces silence (no tumbling) but the motor should still hum when you start the dryer. If you hear nothing at all, it is the motor or power supply, not the belt.
- Thermal fuse — a blown thermal fuse kills power to the entire dryer. The motor will not receive power. Test the fuse for continuity before testing the motor.
- Door switch — a failed door switch prevents the board from sending power to the motor. The board thinks the door is open.
- Idler pulley — a frozen idler pulley prevents the belt from turning, which places a sudden load on the motor. The motor may trip its internal thermal overload.
Motor Testing
- Unplug the dryer
- Access the motor (requires drum removal — see blower wheel guide for drum removal steps)
- Disconnect one motor wire
- Set a multimeter to ohms and test across the motor terminals
- Good motor: 1-5 ohms across the run winding
- Bad motor: Open circuit (OL) = burned winding
- Test each terminal to ground (motor housing) — any continuity indicates a grounded winding
If the motor tests good electrically but will not turn, the bearings are seized. Attempt to turn the motor shaft by hand — it should spin freely with minimal resistance.

Part Numbers and Pricing
| Component | Part Number | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| OEM drive motor | WE17X22217 | $110-$280 |
| OEM motor (older models) | WE17X10010 | $85-$200 |
| Drive belt | WE12X21574 | $8-$18 |
| Idler pulley | WE12X26146 | $12-$30 |
| Aftermarket motor | Varies | $60-$150 |
| Professional installation | — | $180-$300 |
When replacing the motor, also replace the drive belt and idler pulley. The belt is a wear item ($8-$18) and the idler pulley bearing degrades over time ($12-$30). Total parts for all three: $130-$330. This avoids a repeat teardown to replace the belt 6 months later.
Tools Required
Phillips #2 screwdriver, 1/4-inch and 5/16-inch nut drivers, putty knife for top panel clips, socket wrench for the blower wheel clamp bolt (reverse-threaded), needle-nose pliers, multimeter.

Step-by-Step Replacement
Drum Removal
Follow the drum removal procedure: top panel off (putty knife at clips), front panel off (support screws and clips), belt off idler and motor, drum lifted out.
Removing the Blower Wheel
The blower wheel must come off the motor shaft before the motor can be removed. Remove the reverse-threaded clamp bolt (clockwise to loosen). Slide the blower wheel off the shaft.
Removing the Motor
The motor is mounted on a bracket with 2-3 bolts or clips. Disconnect the motor wire harness. Remove the mounting hardware and lift the motor out.
Installing the New Motor
Place the new motor on the bracket and secure with mounting hardware. Reconnect the wire harness. Install the blower wheel on the new motor shaft and tighten the clamp bolt (counterclockwise — reverse thread). Verify the shaft spins freely.
Reassembly and Testing
Reinstall the drum with a new belt, route the belt around the drum, idler pulley, and motor shaft. Reassemble front panel, door switch, and top panel. Plug in the dryer and run a timed cycle. The drum should tumble smoothly and you should feel strong airflow at the exhaust vent.
Motor Life Expectancy
GE dryer motors typically last 10-15 years. The primary life-limiting factor is bearing wear, which is accelerated by lint infiltration and overheating from restricted vents. Keep the vent duct clean and the lint filter in good condition to maximize motor life.

Replace vs Repair Decision
At $110-$280 for the motor plus $180-$300 labor, a professional motor replacement costs $290-$580. If your dryer is over 10 years old, compare this against a new GE dryer ($500-$900). For units under 8 years, replacement makes sense. For units over 12 years, a new dryer with a warranty may be the better investment.
