GE Dishwasher C3: Wash Cycle Exceeded Maximum Runtime — Water Clarity Not Improving
C3 indicates the wash pump ran beyond its maximum continuous time without the optical turbidity sensor detecting adequate cleaning progress. The sensor measures light transmission through wash water — clean water passes more light, dirty water scatters it. C3 means the water stayed dirty too long.
The Optical Turbidity Sensor Explained
An infrared LED shines through a water sample path. A photodetector opposite the LED measures transmission percentage. The board samples this reading every 30 seconds during wash and expects a rising clarity curve as detergent breaks down food soil.
C3 triggers when the clarity reading stays flat or drops after 15 minutes of expected improvement — meaning either the dishes are impossibly dirty, the detergent is ineffective, or the sensor itself gives false readings.

Three-Step Diagnosis
Step 1: Empty Cycle Test
Run a cycle with no dishes and no detergent. If C3 does not appear, the sensor works — the problem is loading, detergent, or spray arms. If C3 appears with clean water, the sensor is fouled or dead.
Step 2: Sensor Cleaning
The sensor sits inside the sump — remove lower rack, spray arm, and filter assembly to access it. The sensor is a small probe with a clear optical window. Wipe with isopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth. Grease film from cooking oils is the most common contamination.
Step 3: Sensor Replacement
If cleaning does not resolve C3, the LED or photodetector has failed. Replace the sensor assembly (WD21X24899, $25-$45). The sensor plugs into the sump from below — disconnect wire connector, release retaining clip, pull out.
Detergent Quality Factors
Expired detergent (pods over 6 months, powder over 12 months) loses enzymatic activity. Enzymes are the active ingredient that breaks down proteins and starches. Without functional enzymes, food soil remains suspended in water, keeping turbidity high.
Also check rinse aid level — rinse aid reduces surface tension, helping dirty water drain off dishes and release food particles into the wash water where the filter can capture them.

Safety First — Know the Risks
Live 120V wiring in a wet environment is one of the most dangerous DIY scenarios. Water + electricity = serious shock risk. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Spray Arm Assessment
Partially clogged spray arms reduce wash action. Food soil stays on dishes, water stays dirty, turbidity stays high — C3 is the accurate result of inadequate washing. Pull both spray arms and inspect every nozzle hole for blockage.
