Frigidaire Microwave F1: Thermal Sensor or Board Fault
What F1 Means
F1 on Frigidaire microwaves indicates the control board received an out-of-range temperature reading from the cavity thermistor. The board uses this sensor to monitor oven cavity temperature during cooking, particularly during convection and sensor cooking modes. An abnormal reading triggers F1 and halts operation.

The Component
The cavity thermistor mounts inside the microwave cavity, usually at the top rear wall behind a small plastic cover. It reads oven air temperature for the control algorithms. At room temperature, the thermistor should read approximately 1,000-1,100 ohms (Frigidaire uses a different NTC range than their dryers and dishwashers).
Quick Reset
Unplug the microwave for five minutes. Plug back in. If F1 does not return, a transient electrical event caused a momentary bad reading. Monitor for recurrence over 48 hours.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Microwave capacitors store lethal voltage (4,000V+) even when unplugged. This is the single most dangerous DIY appliance repair. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Testing the Thermistor
- Unplug the microwave. Remove the outer cabinet (screws along the back and sides). Warning: microwave capacitors store lethal voltage. Do not touch any internal components near the magnetron or capacitor. Only access the thermistor, which is on the cavity wall away from high-voltage components.
- Locate the thermistor at the top rear of the cavity. Disconnect its two-pin connector.
- Measure resistance: 1,000-1,100 ohms at room temperature. Infinite or under 100 ohms indicates failure.
- If resistance is normal, the board's temperature input circuit has failed.
Repair Options
Thermistor replacement ($15-$30 parts). Remove the mounting screw or clip. Disconnect the old sensor. Install the new one in the same position. Reconnect and reassemble.
Board replacement ($80-$150 parts). Required if the thermistor tests normal. Microwave board replacement should be performed by a technician due to the proximity of high-voltage components during disassembly and reassembly.

| Component | Parts | Professional Total |
|---|---|---|
| Cavity thermistor | $15-$30 | $100-$170 |
| Control board | $80-$150 | $160-$270 |
Repair vs. Replace for Microwaves
Microwaves are the most frequently replaced appliance due to relatively low replacement cost ($150-$500 for countertop, $300-$800 for over-the-range). If the repair cost exceeds 50% of a new comparable unit, replacement is usually the practical choice. F1 on a countertop model under four years old warrants repair. F1 on a unit over seven years old is borderline.
Over-the-range Frigidaire Gallery microwaves cost more to replace due to installation complexity, making board repair ($160-$270) more economical than replacement ($300-$800 plus installation).

FAQ
Is F1 dangerous? F1 itself is not dangerous. The microwave locks out cooking functions when F1 is active. However, never attempt internal microwave repairs without understanding capacitor discharge procedures.
F1 appears only during convection mode. The thermistor is most active during convection cooking. If F1 only triggers in convection, the sensor may be marginal and reading out-of-range only at elevated temperatures.
Can a power surge cause F1? Yes. Surges can damage the board's analog input circuit, causing F1 even with a healthy thermistor.
