How to Replace a Frigidaire Over-the-Range Microwave: Complete Installation Guide
Replacing an over-the-range (OTR) Frigidaire microwave is one of the more physically demanding appliance installations because the unit weighs 50-65 pounds and must be held overhead while securing mounting hardware. However, the process is logically straightforward: remove the old unit from its bracket, install the mounting plate for the new unit (or reuse the existing one if replacing with the same model family), connect electrical power and vent ductwork, and secure the unit. Frigidaire OTR microwaves share mounting patterns with Electrolux units, and newer models often fit the same bracket as the previous generation.
This guide covers the complete removal and installation process for Frigidaire and Frigidaire Gallery over-the-range microwaves. A helper is strongly recommended for lifting the unit into position.
Before You Start
- Tools needed: Phillips #2 screwdriver, drill with 3/8" bit (if new bracket holes needed), stud finder, level, 3/8" socket or wrench, wire strippers, wire nuts, voltage tester, measuring tape
- Parts needed: New Frigidaire OTR microwave with included mounting bracket, hardware kit, and template
- Time required: 60-90 minutes (with helper)
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Safety warning: Turn off the dedicated circuit breaker for the microwave circuit before disconnecting or connecting any electrical wires. Verify power is off with a non-contact voltage tester. This is a heavy lift — use a helper or a temporary support shelf to avoid injury.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Area and Turn Off Power
Clear the stovetop and counters below the microwave. Turn off the circuit breaker for the microwave circuit (typically a dedicated 20A circuit). Verify power is dead using a non-contact voltage tester at the outlet or junction box above the microwave location. If the existing microwave is hardwired (no plug), the wiring junction box is inside the upper cabinet above the microwave position.
Step 2: Remove the Old Microwave
Open the upper cabinet above the microwave. Locate the 2 mounting bolts that go through the cabinet floor into the top of the microwave. Remove these bolts using a 3/8" socket. Support the microwave from below while removing the last bolt (it will drop without support). With your helper supporting the front, tilt the bottom of the microwave toward you and lift the rear mounting tabs off the wall bracket. Lower the unit carefully. Disconnect the power cord from the outlet, or if hardwired, open the junction box and disconnect the wire nuts.
Step 3: Remove or Assess the Existing Wall Bracket
The mounting plate (wall bracket) is a horizontal metal plate screwed into wall studs. If replacing with the same Frigidaire model family, the existing bracket may work. Compare the new bracket (included with the new microwave) to the existing one. If mounting hole patterns match, leave the existing bracket. If different, remove the old bracket (typically 4-6 lag screws into studs) and install the new one.
Step 4: Install the New Mounting Bracket
Using the paper template included with the new microwave, mark the wall for bracket position. The template specifies exact height above the cooktop (minimum 30" from cooktop surface to bottom of microwave per code) and stud locations. Find studs with your stud finder and mark them. Hold the bracket level against the wall, aligning with stud marks. Pre-drill 3/8" holes if needed. Secure the bracket with the provided lag screws (must go into studs — toggle bolts are NOT adequate for the weight). Verify the bracket is level.
Step 5: Prepare Venting Configuration
Frigidaire OTR microwaves can vent in three configurations: vertical (up through the cabinet and roof), horizontal (out the back wall), or recirculating (through the charcoal filter and back into the kitchen). Determine your configuration and set the vent damper inside the new microwave accordingly. For vertical venting: ensure the cabinet above has a vent cutout aligned with the microwave's top exhaust port. For recirculating: install the charcoal filter (included) in the bottom grille area per the instructions.
Step 6: Connect Electrical Power
If using a plug connection: route the microwave's power cord through the cabinet floor hole (a 1.5" hole should already exist from the previous installation) and plug into the dedicated outlet inside the upper cabinet. If hardwired: route the wires from the junction box through the cabinet floor. Connect black to black, white to white, and green/bare to the ground wire or green screw using wire nuts. Tuck wires into the junction box and close the cover plate.
Step 7: Mount the New Microwave
This requires two people. One person lifts the rear of the microwave to engage the mounting tabs (keyhole slots on the back) onto the wall bracket hooks. The second person supports the front. Once the rear is hooked onto the bracket, the unit hangs at an angle with the front lower than the back. While the helper holds the unit, go above into the cabinet and install the 2 mounting bolts through the cabinet floor into the top mounting holes of the microwave. Tighten the bolts firmly to pull the microwave flush against the wall. The unit should now be fully supported.
Step 8: Connect Vent Ductwork and Final Assembly
For ducted installations: connect the vent adapter (included) from the microwave's exhaust port to the existing ductwork using foil duct tape (not cloth tape which degrades with heat). For recirculating: verify the charcoal filter is installed. Install the bottom exhaust grille panel (snaps into place on most Frigidaire models). Install any decorative trim pieces. Restore power at the breaker.
Step 9: Test All Functions
Turn on the microwave light — should illuminate the cooktop below. Turn on the exhaust fan at all speeds. Place a cup of water inside and run on HIGH for 30 seconds to verify heating. Check for any rattling or vibration during exhaust fan operation. Verify the turntable rotates smoothly. Set the clock and test the timer function.

Common Installation Challenges
- No stud at mounting point: You must find alternative stud locations or use a combination of stud-mounted screws and heavy-duty toggle bolts. At least two mounting points must hit studs to safely support 50-65 pounds
- Cabinet bottom in the way: Some cabinet configurations require cutting or removing the cabinet floor to route the power cord and vent duct. Use a jigsaw for clean cuts
- Existing ductwork misaligned: If the new microwave's vent port does not align with existing ductwork, use a flexible aluminum transition duct (not plastic) to bridge the gap
- Power cord too short: The standard Frigidaire power cord is 36 inches. If the outlet is farther away, the outlet must be relocated (do not use extension cords for permanent appliance installation)
When to Call a Professional
Contact a professional if:
- The existing wiring is not a dedicated circuit (microwave shares with other outlets) and needs an electrician to run a new line
- Wall studs are not in the expected locations and you are not comfortable with structural mounting solutions
- The installation requires new ductwork through the roof or exterior wall
- The electrical connection is hardwired and you are not comfortable working with household wiring
- The old bracket left large holes that need repair before new bracket installation

FAQ
Q: Can I reuse the existing mounting bracket when replacing my Frigidaire microwave? A: If replacing with the same model or same-generation Frigidaire/Electrolux unit, the bracket often fits. However, if switching between Basic, Gallery, and Professional lines, or if the new model is a different year, the bracket pattern may differ. Always compare before assuming compatibility.
Q: Do I need a dedicated circuit for a Frigidaire OTR microwave? A: Yes. Frigidaire OTR microwaves draw 12-15 amps and require a dedicated 20A circuit per electrical code. Sharing a circuit with other appliances risks tripping the breaker during high-power cooking.
Q: Can one person install an over-the-range microwave? A: While possible with a temporary support shelf screwed into the wall below the bracket, it is strongly discouraged. The unit weighs 50-65 pounds and must be lifted overhead while aligning mounting tabs. A helper makes this significantly safer and easier.
Q: How do I know if my Frigidaire microwave vents outside or recirculates? A: Look above the microwave into the upper cabinet. If you see ductwork going up through the roof or out through the wall, your installation is ducted. If there is no ductwork and the top just opens into the cabinet space, it recirculates through the bottom charcoal filter.
