Frigidaire Dishwasher Motor Replacement Guide — Cost, Signs & DIY Tips
The Frigidaire dishwasher uses a combined circulation pump and motor assembly — you cannot replace just the motor or just the pump impeller. Electrolux engineers these as sealed, non-serviceable units (newer part# 5304519906, legacy 154844301). The assembly mounts underneath the tub center, accessed by removing the bottom kick panel and working from below.
This combined design simplifies replacement (one assembly, one electrical connection, a few hose connections) but increases part cost. Unlike brands that separate the motor and pump housing, Frigidaire gives you a complete pre-assembled unit with new seals, impeller, and motor already mated together.
How the Circulation Motor Works
The circulation pump/motor draws water from the sump (lowest point of the tub), pressurizes it, and forces it through the spray arms. It is the component that makes the spray arms spin — without it, dishes sit in still water with no cleaning action.
Gallery models (FGID prefix) with OrbitClean use the same motor but add a diverter valve that alternates water pressure between the standard spray arm and the OrbitClean secondary arm. The motor itself is identical, but the pump housing may have an additional port for the diverter.

Symptoms of Circulation Motor Failure
- No spray arm rotation — open the door mid-cycle (pause first on electronic models). If the spray arms are stationary and there is no water pressure when you lift a spray arm, the motor is not running
- Loud humming without water movement — the motor is receiving power (you can hear it trying to run) but the impeller is seized. Common cause: a shard of glass or broken dish fragment wedging between the impeller and pump housing
- Grinding noise throughout the wash cycle — worn motor bearings. The noise typically starts intermittently and worsens over weeks
- Motor trips the breaker or blows a fuse — the motor winding has shorted. This is an electrical failure requiring immediate replacement
- Diagnostic mode shows motor test failure — in diagnostic mode (Start/Cancel x3, then Start), the wash motor test is the second phase. If the motor does not activate during this test, the board is sending the signal but the motor is not responding
Before Condemning the Motor
The circulation motor is one of the most expensive Frigidaire dishwasher parts. Before ordering:
- Check the sump for debris — remove the flat mesh filter, the spray arm, and the filter housing (some models have a secondary screen). Look for glass, bone, or plastic fragments that could jam the impeller
- Listen for the motor — does it hum at all when a cycle starts? If completely silent, the problem may be the control board relay, not the motor. Test for voltage at the motor connector (should see 120V AC during the wash phase)
- Check the motor capacitor (if equipped) — some Frigidaire models use a start capacitor for the circulation motor. A failed capacitor causes a humming-but-not-starting symptom identical to a seized motor. The capacitor is a small cylindrical component near the motor, costs $10–$20

Circulation Motor Cost
| Component | Cost |
|---|---|
| OEM combined pump/motor (5304519906) | $120–$250 |
| Legacy part (154844301 for older models) | $80–$180 |
| Electrolux cross-reference | 10–20% less on average |
| Aftermarket assembly | $50–$150 |
| Professional labor | $150–$250 |
| DIY total | $50–$250 |
| Professional total | $200–$550 |
At $200+ professional cost, this repair approaches the threshold where a new dishwasher may be a better value — especially on Standard models older than 8 years.
Replacement Procedure
- Disconnect power at the breaker. Turn off water supply.
- Remove the bottom kick panel (2 Phillips screws + spring clips).
- Disconnect the drain hose from the pump assembly to provide clearance. Have towels and a pan ready for residual water.
- Locate the circulation motor assembly — it is the largest component under the tub, center-mounted, with 2–3 rubber hoses (inlet from sump, outlet to spray arms, and on some models a drain branch).
- Photograph all connections — hose positions, electrical connector orientation, ground wire location.
- Release the hose clamps (spring clamps — use channel-lock pliers) and pull hoses off the pump nipples.
- Disconnect the electrical connector — typically a multi-pin Molex plug. Some models also have a separate ground wire secured by a screw.
- Remove the mounting hardware — the assembly is held to the tub by a mounting bracket with 2–4 screws, or a twist-lock ring on newer models.
- Lower the old assembly out. Some models require slight rotation to clear the mounting flanges.
- Install the new assembly. Align the mounting bracket, secure with screws or twist-lock. Reconnect all hoses with spring clamps positioned over the barb ridges. Reconnect the electrical connector and ground wire.
- Reconnect the drain hose. Reinstall the kick panel.
- Restore power and water. Run diagnostic mode — the wash motor test should produce strong water pressure through the spray arms.
Tools: Phillips #2, channel-lock pliers, 1/4-inch nut driver, towels, shallow pan. Time: 45–60 minutes.

OrbitClean Diverter Valve
If your Gallery model has OrbitClean and the spray arm pattern seems weak or uneven, the diverter valve (mounted on the pump housing) may be the actual failure — not the motor. The diverter is a separate, less expensive part. Before replacing the entire pump/motor assembly, check whether the diverter valve is stuck or broken.
Repair vs. Replace Decision
| Unit Age | Standard (FFID) | Gallery (FGID) | Professional (FPID) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 5 years | Replace motor | Replace motor | Replace motor |
| 5–8 years | Replace motor | Replace motor | Replace motor |
| 8–10 years | Consider new unit | Replace motor | Replace motor |
| Over 10 years | New unit likely better value | Consider new unit | Replace motor (higher unit cost justifies repair) |

FAQ
Can I replace just the motor or just the pump on a Frigidaire dishwasher?
No. Frigidaire uses a combined pump/motor assembly that is not field-serviceable. You replace the entire unit.
Why does my Frigidaire dishwasher hum but not wash?
Three causes in order of likelihood: (1) debris jamming the impeller — check the sump, (2) failed start capacitor ($10-$20 fix), (3) seized motor bearings.
How much does a Frigidaire dishwasher motor cost?
$50-$250 for the part, $200-$550 with professional installation. On units over 8 years old, compare against new dishwasher pricing.
Is the Frigidaire dishwasher motor the same as Electrolux?
On shared-platform models, the pump/motor assembly cross-references between brands. Verify by part number.
