Frigidaire Dishwasher Fan Replacement Guide — Cost, Signs & DIY Tips
Most Frigidaire dishwashers do not have a fan. Standard models (FFID prefix) use passive condensation drying — the residual heat from the wash cycle evaporates moisture from dishes, and the steam condenses on the cooler stainless tub walls, draining away by gravity. No fan motor, no fan blade, nothing to replace.
Gallery models (FGID prefix) with the MaxBoost drying feature add a small fan module behind the rear wall of the tub. This fan circulates heated air across dishes during the drying phase, improving drying performance on plastic items that do not retain heat well. If you have a Standard Frigidaire dishwasher and are searching for a fan part — your model does not have one.
Which Frigidaire Dishwashers Have a Drying Fan?
| Model Tier | Prefix | Fan Present? | Drying Method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Frigidaire | FFID | No | Heated dry (calrod element) + passive condensation |
| Frigidaire Gallery | FGID | Some models — check MaxBoost feature | MaxBoost fan + heated dry |
| Frigidaire Professional | FPID | Some models | Similar to Gallery |
Check your owner's manual or the Frigidaire spec sheet for your model number. If "MaxBoost" is not listed as a feature, you do not have a drying fan.

How the MaxBoost Fan Works
The MaxBoost fan is a small DC motor with a centrifugal blower wheel, mounted behind the rear tub wall near the top. During the drying phase, the control board energizes both the calrod heating element and the fan simultaneously. The fan draws air through a filtered intake, blows it across the heating element, and the heated air circulates through the tub.
The fan only operates during the dry portion of the cycle — it does not run during wash or rinse phases. If your dishes are wet after the drying cycle but the wash performance is fine, the fan or its control relay may have failed.
Symptoms of MaxBoost Fan Failure
- Dishes wet after a complete cycle, especially plastics — the heated dry element alone cannot dry plastics effectively because plastic does not retain enough heat for condensation drying. The fan's forced air circulation is needed.
- No air movement audible during the drying phase — open the door slightly near the end of a cycle and listen. You should hear the fan running during drying. Silence indicates a dead motor or no power from the board.
- Fan runs briefly then stops — the motor bearings are seizing. When the motor overheats, its thermal protector opens the circuit. It cools down, restarts briefly, and repeats.
- Rattling noise during drying only — a loose or cracked fan blade on the blower wheel. The blade hits the housing with each revolution.

Testing the Fan Motor
- Enter diagnostic mode (Start/Cancel x3, then Start). The diagnostic sequence tests components in order: fill, wash, drain, heat/dry. During the heat/dry test, listen for the fan.
- If no fan noise during diagnostic: Access the fan from behind the rear tub wall (remove the rear panel screws from outside the dishwasher — you may need to pull the unit out from the counter). Disconnect the fan motor connector and test the motor terminals with a multimeter. You should read 20–80 ohms across the winding. An open circuit (infinite resistance) means the motor winding is burned.
- If the motor reads good but does not run: The problem is the control board relay that powers the fan, not the fan itself.

Replacement Procedure
- Disconnect power at the breaker.
- Pull the dishwasher out from under the counter enough to access the rear panel. Disconnect the water supply and drain hose if needed for clearance.
- Remove the rear access panel — typically 6–8 Phillips screws.
- Locate the fan module — top-right or top-center of the rear tub wall. It is held by 2–3 screws and has a 2-pin connector.
- Disconnect the wire connector and remove the mounting screws.
- Install the new fan. Align mounting holes, drive screws, reconnect the connector.
- Reinstall the rear panel. Slide the dishwasher back, reconnect water supply and drain hose.
- Run diagnostic mode to verify the fan operates during the dry test.
Tools: Phillips #2, multimeter (for testing), nut driver (rear panel screws). Time: 30–45 minutes (including pulling the unit out).
If You Do Not Have MaxBoost — Improving Drying
Standard Frigidaire models rely on the calrod heating element for drying. If dishes are wet after the cycle:
- Use the "Heated Dry" option if your model has a selectable dry setting
- Use rinse aid — it breaks the surface tension of water on dishes, allowing it to sheet off rather than bead
- Open the door 2 inches immediately after the cycle ends to let steam escape. Some Gallery models have an auto-door-open feature that does this automatically
- Avoid overloading — dishes need air space between them for condensation drying to work

FAQ
Does my Frigidaire dishwasher have a drying fan?
Only Gallery (FGID) and some Professional (FPID) models with the MaxBoost feature have a fan. Standard Frigidaire models (FFID) use passive condensation drying — no fan to replace.
Why are my dishes wet after the Frigidaire dishwasher cycle?
On models without MaxBoost: use rinse aid, select Heated Dry if available, and open the door after the cycle. On MaxBoost models: the drying fan may have failed.
How do I test the Frigidaire dishwasher drying fan?
Run diagnostic mode (Start/Cancel x3, then Start). Listen during the heat/dry phase. No fan sound means a dead motor or failed board relay.
Can I add a fan to my Standard Frigidaire dishwasher?
No. The Standard model tub does not have the fan mounting location or wiring. Upgrading requires a Gallery-tier dishwasher.
