Frigidaire Dishwasher ER1: Water in the Base Pan
Act Now, Not Later
ER1 is Frigidaire's leak detection alert. The float switch in the stamped-metal base pan beneath your dishwasher has risen because water accumulated where it should never be. The dishwasher has shut off all water intake as protection, but the water that triggered the float is still sitting under the machine.
Immediate action: Remove the lower kick plate (two screws or spring clips at the bottom front). Shine a flashlight underneath. If you see standing water, place towels to absorb it. If water is actively dripping from any component, close the supply valve under the sink immediately.

Five Leak Sources That Trigger ER1
The base pan sits beneath all working components and catches any water that escapes the tub or plumbing. The float switch triggers when water depth reaches approximately three-eighths of an inch. Five specific failure points put water there:
1. Tub-to-pump seal degradation. The rubber gasket between the tub sump and the drain pump housing compresses from thousands of thermal cycles. Frigidaire dishwashers run wash water at 140 to 155 degrees when the heated wash option is active. Heat gradually destroys rubber elasticity. Once the seal loses compression, water weeps past during the drain phase when pump pressure is highest. This is the most common source on units over five years old. Part: pump seal kit 154724801.
2. Inlet hose connection. The brass compression fitting at the inlet solenoid valve uses a rubber cone washer. After seven to ten years this washer hardens and no longer conforms to the barb. A slow drip develops that accumulates over weeks until the float triggers.
3. Door gasket failure at the lower corners. The gasket wraps around three sides (bottom and both sides). Lower corners absorb the most splash from the lower spray arm. If the gasket has pulled from its retaining channel or developed a flat spot from the door pressing against trapped debris, water escapes during wash and drain phases.
4. Spray arm hub seal (Gallery models with OrbitClean). The OrbitClean system's rotating seal handles both water pressure and rotational friction. OrbitClean operates at higher pressure than standard spray arms, which accelerates seal wear. Part: hub seal (varies by model, typically $12-$20).
5. Cracked tub. Stainless tubs on Gallery and Professional Series are essentially immune. Plastic tubs on standard models can crack if heavy cast iron or ceramic pieces are dropped during loading.
Finding the Exact Drip Source
Remove the kick plate before running the dishwasher. Start a Normal cycle. Get on the floor with a flashlight and watch the base pan area through the fill, wash, and drain phases. The leak rate increases during whichever phase stresses the failed component:
- Drip during fill only points to the inlet valve connection or inlet hose.
- Drip during wash phase points to the door gasket, spray arm seal, or tub crack.
- Drip during drain phase points to the pump seal or drain hose connection.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Live 120V wiring in a wet environment is one of the most dangerous DIY scenarios. Water + electricity = serious shock risk. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Repair Procedures
Pump seal (154724801, $15-$30). Disconnect power and water. Pull the dishwasher from the cabinet. Tip on its back. The pump assembly is accessible from below. Remove three hex-head bolts, disconnect the wiring harness, pull the pump down. Replace the gasket on the pump flange and reinstall with even torque.
Door gasket (154827601, $25-$45). No tools needed beyond a flat-head screwdriver. Pull the old gasket from its channel starting at a corner. Clean out adhesive residue. Press the new gasket in starting at center bottom, working toward each corner. Ensure it seats fully with no gaps.
Inlet washer ($3 at any hardware store). Close the supply valve. Disconnect the coupling nut from the inlet valve. Swap the old cone washer for a new one (cone pointing into the valve body). Hand-tighten the coupling nut plus one-quarter turn with pliers.
Resetting ER1
After fixing the leak, dry the base pan completely with towels or a wet-dry vacuum. Ensure the float switch drops to its resting position. Pull the breaker for five minutes, then restore power. If the float is down, ER1 clears and the dishwasher resumes normal operation.

Cost Summary
| Repair | Parts | With Professional Labor |
|---|---|---|
| Pump seal | $15-$30 | $120-$180 |
| Door gasket | $25-$45 | $100-$160 |
| Inlet cone washer | $3 | $80-$120 |
| OrbitClean hub seal | $12-$20 | $100-$150 |
Repair Economics
If the dishwasher is under nine years old with no other codes, any ER1 repair at under $180 is clearly worthwhile against a $700 to $1,200 replacement. Gallery models in particular hold value longer because the OrbitClean system and stainless tub are durable.

FAQ
Can condensation trigger ER1? Extremely unlikely. The float requires three-eighths of an inch of standing water, far more than condensation produces. If ER1 triggered, a genuine leak exists.
My kitchen floor is dry. How can there be a leak? The base pan catches water before it reaches your floor. That is its designed purpose. A slow leak can accumulate in the pan over many cycles without any visible floor moisture.
Can I override ER1 and run the dishwasher? No. The board locks out all water intake when the float switch is triggered. This safety function is operating correctly and cannot be bypassed through button combinations.
ER1 means a real leak needs attention. Our technicians locate the exact source and carry common seal and gasket replacements for single-visit resolution. Book a leak diagnostic.
