The short answer
The first thing to rule out on a EuroDesign dryer is the top cause below — worn drum support rollers or glides — and the second is a dry or worn idler pulley. Dryer noise comes from a very short list of moving parts — the drum supports, the belt, the idler and the blower — and each one has a distinctive sound and rhythm.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- A grinding or roaring that has grown over months — A drum bearing or rear support at the end of its life.
- A rhythmic squeal or chirp that follows drum rotation — Idler pulley or a drum support roller running dry.
- The condensate tank fills quickly, or the condenser filter has never been removed — A condensing dryer has two filter stages and a water-handling path a vented machine does not have.
- NEAR MISS — a thumping only with a big load of trainers — That is the load, and it stops when the load changes.
The ranking that matters
- Worn drum support rollers or glides — Ranked first on a EuroDesign dryer because the cabinet, the hinges and the ventilation channel are part of the machine here, and they are the part nobody re-checks after fitting day. A flat spot on a roller gives a thump once per revolution; worn glides at the front give a scrape or a rumble that varies with load.
- A dry or worn idler pulley — Second here: the wearing parts are good for years, so they rank below anything that can be checked without a panel off.
- A blower wheel that has loosened or is rubbing its housing — A loose blower wheel produces a rattle that changes with the motor rather than with the drum, which is a useful distinction.
Where to start, and why there
- First: Turn the drum slowly by hand with the power off and feel for a catch at the same point each revolution. — It sits first because the cabinet, the hinges and the ventilation channel are part of the machine here, and they are the part nobody re-checks after fitting day.
- Second: Note whether the squeal is continuous while the drum turns and stops the instant it stops. — Next, and it needs no tool.
- Third: Note whether the noise follows drum speed or motor speed. — Only once the checks above are clean.
What an owner can safely check
- Remove and rinse the condenser as well as the lint filter — On a condensing machine the condenser is a second filter stage, and it is the part owners most often do not know exists.

- Empty the drum and run it briefly with nothing in it — Separates load noise from machine noise in two minutes.

- Level the cabinet and pull it clear of the wall — All four feet firm and nothing touching, before any part is suspected.

- STOP before opening the cabinet to reach the belt, idler or blower — Those repairs mean lifting the drum out on a machine with an element or a gas train inside.
Safety first
Safety
Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or reaching into the lint slot — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not run a dryer with a known rattling object inside: it can chip the blower wheel or, if it is metal against a heater, create a hot spot in a cabinet full of lint.
When this becomes a service call
Call a technician when the noise is a squeal, a once-per-revolution thump or a grinding roar — those are the idler, rollers and bearings, and all three are inside the cabinet. Call sooner if the noise is accompanied by any smell of hot rubber or by a drum that has become hard to turn by hand.
