What this usually means
On a EuroDesign dryer the ranking below starts where it does for a reason: the most common finding is the door switch is not making, and the next is no power, a tripped breaker, or one missing leg on a 240-volt machine. A dryer that will not start is usually a door switch, a supply problem or a start circuit, and the sound the machine makes when the button is pressed separates those three immediately.
What the owner actually sees
- It starts and stops immediately when the button is released — A start switch or a motor relay that is not latching.
- Completely dead — no lights, no click, nothing — A supply fault, or on a 240-volt machine the loss of both legs.
- The condensate tank fills quickly, or the condenser filter has never been removed — A condensing dryer has two filter stages and a water-handling path a vented machine does not have.
- NEAR MISS — it runs but never heats — That is the heating page, not this one.
Causes, most likely first
- The door switch is not making — Ranked first on a EuroDesign dryer because a fitted door adds weight and leverage to a hinge that was set for a bare door, so seal and alignment faults arrive early. The switch has to prove the door is shut.
- No power, a tripped breaker, or one missing leg on a 240-volt machine — Second here: these are hard-wired or single-outlet installs, so supply is a quick exclusion rather than a likely cause.
- The start switch, timer or control not latching the motor circuit — A machine that runs only while the button is held has a latch problem rather than a motor problem.
Where to start, and why there
- First: Press the door firmly closed while pressing start, and listen for the small click the switch makes as the door closes. — It sits first because a fitted door adds weight and leverage to a hinge that was set for a bare door, so seal and alignment faults arrive early.
- Second: Check the breaker, and on an electric dryer check both halves of a double breaker. — Next, and it needs no tool.
- Third: Note whether it runs at all while the button is held down. — Only once the checks above are clean.
Steps you can take yourself
- Remove and rinse the condenser as well as the lint filter — On a condensing machine the condenser is a second filter stage, and it is the part owners most often do not know exists.
Tools: warm water, soft brushAbout 30 min
- Listen carefully as you press start — Silence, a click, or a hum — each names a different part of the machine, and the observation costs nothing.
About 5 min
- Check the breaker, including both halves of a double breaker — Reset once and note whether it holds.
About 10 min
- STOP before removing the cabinet to reach the motor, belt or fuse — That is live work in a cabinet with a heating element or a gas train.
Safety first
Safety
If you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself. Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.
When to call a technician
Call a technician when the machine hums and will not turn, when the drum will not move by hand, or when it is dead with a proven live circuit. Call a gas technician for any starting complaint on a gas machine that comes with a smell of gas, and evacuate before making that call.

Scope of this page
This page is generalized across the EuroDesign dryer range — written for the appliance class, not for one family or model line, and no family- or model-specific page has been published beneath it yet. When one is, it will be the more specific answer and it will be linked here; until then the closest pages are listed below.
