The short answer

- Fill not proven part-way through — first, because a compact machine fills more than once in a cycle and a tap that was closed, a tank that emptied or the faucet adapter or the internal fill tank that worked itself loose stops the cycle at the second fill rather than at the start
- Drain not proven — the mirror image, and the second most common: a hose that kinks once the machine has warmed and softened it, or a sink that filled up, stalls the cycle at a drain step every time

Do not open the door to look mid-cycle on a machine that has been heating — wash water and steam can scald.
