Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never bend, lever or cut refrigerant tubing to stop it touching something — the lines are under pressure and a puncture ends the appliance. Keep fingers out of any fan while the unit is plugged in, because a condenser fan on a temperature control can start without warning.
When to stop and call a technician
Call for service when the noise is a metallic knock or grinding from inside the sealed machine bay, when the compressor starts and stops on a short loop on a proven supply, or when a fan is clearly failing. Anything requiring the machine bay to be opened is a service job.
