What no ice usually means on a GE
On a GE refrigerator an empty ice bucket is usually a water-supply fault, not a failed ice maker. A restricted or badly seated filter, and a fill tube frozen shut by a valve that no longer closes cleanly, are what we find most often, and both rank ahead of the module. Filter and fill tube are owner work; metering a valve coil is a service call.
What you are seeing
- The bucket is empty, or holds a thin shell from an old harvest.
- Cubes are hollow, undersized or fused into a slab.
- The maker cycles and the valve buzzes, but no water arrives.
- A plug of ice caps the fill cup behind the mold.
- Not this fault: Ice is made but jams in the chute - a dispenser and auger fault.
- Not this fault: The whole freezer is warm and food softens - read the not-cooling page first.
Most likely causes, in GE order
- Filter overdue, unseated, or an aftermarket cartridge that does not seal — Why ranked: GE housings pass full flow only when the cartridge is turned home; the door can trickle far below the rate a mold needs.
- Fill tube frozen at the fill cup — Why ranked: The GE-specific finding: the tube enters at the rear, so a slow-closing valve leaves standing water where it freezes.
- Weak inlet valve or low supply pressure — Why ranked: The ice branch must stay open long enough to fill; a part-closed shutoff gives hollow cubes before it gives none.
- Freezer not cold enough to trigger harvest — Why ranked: The mold thermostat holds the harvest until the mold is properly cold, so production stops before anything visibly breaks.
- Ice maker module, rake motor or mold heater failed — Why ranked: Real, but less common than the water path here. A module that hums without raking points to it.
What to check, in order
- Dispense water, judge the stream, then reseat the filter. — Because: Top-ranked cause, and it splits the problem: a weak stream indicts the water path.
- Empty the bucket and look into the fill cup behind the mold. — Because: A plug confirms rank two on sight and explains a maker that cycles but never fills.
- Leave a thermometer in the freezer overnight. — Because: A warm compartment blocks harvest, so testing the maker first tests the wrong conditions.
- Trace the supply line to its shutoff; confirm it is open and unkinked. — Because: It costs nothing and clears the cheap half of rank three.
- Only now, listen for a harvest cycle and watch the rake. — Because: The module is rank five; testing it first is how owners replace working parts.
Checks you can do safely

- Stop rule: Stop here. Testing the valve coil, mold heater or module means metering live terminals, which is service work.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut the water off before disturbing the supply line. Never chip ice from a fill tube with a blade - you will pierce the tube or the mold heater. Do not aim a heat gun at the freezer liner; a warm damp cloth is the safe method.
When this becomes a service call
Flow is strong, the tube is clear, the freezer is cold, and the mold still will not fill. The fill tube refreezes within days of being cleared, meaning the valve is not shutting off. Water pools under the ice compartment or runs down inside a door. The freezer cannot hold 0 °F (-18 °C) - fix the cooling fault first.
