Symptoms worth separating
- A sheet of ice under the crisper drawers — The drain has blocked and melt water is refreezing where it stands — the signature of this fault.
- A pool of water on the floor at the front of the cabinet — Water running forward along the base instead of draining to the pan at the back.
- NEAR MISS — water on the outside of the door only — That is condensation at a failed seal, and the door-seal page covers it.
- The drain pan at the back is dry while the floor is wet — Conclusive: water is leaving the cabinet before it reaches the pan.
What is usually behind it
- Defrost drain blocked with debris or frozen shut — Ranked first: It accounts for the two hallmark signs together — ice under the drawers and water on the floor — which no other cause does as neatly. It sits at the top here because the line has been out of production long enough that every unit still running is well past its easy years.
- Drain pan cracked, displaced or overflowing — Second: An overflowing pan typically means the system is running far more than it should, which is a second fault worth knowing about.
- Door seal leaking and condensing air inside the cabinet — Third: Warm humid air entering at a gap condenses on the first cold surface and runs down, overwhelming a drain that was coping until then.
Order of investigation
- Look for ice under the crisper drawers first — Pull the drawers right out. Ice here is the single most useful finding available, and it points straight at the drain.
- Check the cabinet has clearance at the back and above — A unit boxed into a recess runs hot and imitates a failing system, so this is eliminated before anything is opened.
- Put a spirit level across the top of the cabinet — Front-to-back level decides which way melt water travels, and the answer is often the entire diagnosis.
The owner procedure
- Clear the drain with warm water and a soft flexible tube — Pour slowly and let the warmth do the work. Never use a metal wire or a sharp tool — a punctured trough turns a free fix into a repair.

- Flush the drain again a week later to confirm it stays clear — A drain that reblocks quickly is telling you there is debris further along than warm water can reach.

Safety
Pull the plug, or trip the breaker that feeds the outlet, before any panel comes off; a stored charge can sit in a capacitor long after the lights go out. A capacitor keeps a charge after the power is off, so treat the compressor terminals as energised until you have proved otherwise. Nothing in the sealed circuit is an owner job: it is pressurised, and the law treats venting it as a violation in its own right.
Where the owner job ends
The dividing line is the trough: clearing, cleaning and levelling are owner work, while anything that involves removing the evaporator cover is not. If the part that is probably needed costs a serious fraction of a replacement, get the cause named in writing before agreeing to anything.
