Before a control board is condemned, the supply, the sensors and a proper power-down reset all need eliminating. Nothing here requires the control panel to come off. On this kind of cabinet a survivor of this vintage has usually already had one repair, and the previous repair is part of the diagnosis.
What you actually observe
- Buttons do nothing, or need several presses — Often a control lock that has been switched on accidentally, and sometimes a failing membrane.
- The temperature shown does not match a thermometer in the unit — A sensing fault, and the reason the unit may be running warm while insisting it is not.
- The cabinet cools but ignores the set point — Typical of a thermistor reading out of range: the board acts correctly on wrong information.
- NEAR MISS — the display is fine and the unit is warm — Work the cooling-failure page; the control is reporting the situation accurately.
What is usually behind it
- Supply problem: marginal outlet, extension lead or a shared circuit — Ranked first: Electronic controls are sensitive to voltage sag in a way that mechanical controls never were, and an extension lead is a common culprit. It sits at the top here because a survivor of this vintage has usually already had one repair, and the previous repair is part of the diagnosis.
- Moisture or corrosion at a connector — Second: Condensation in a control cavity corrodes pins slowly, and the first sign is a fault that comes and goes with humidity.
- Control board failed — Third: It is the diagnosis that remains once the supply, the sensors and the switches are confirmed, and not before.
What to look at first
- Watch the door switch operate — Press it by hand and watch the interior lamp; a lamp that stays on with the door shut is a switch fault reporting as a control fault.
- Perform a full power-down reset — Unplug the unit or trip its breaker, wait several minutes, and restore power; a control that clears its fault is telling you it was confused rather than broken.
- Compare the display reading with a thermometer — A control acting on a wrong reading behaves perfectly while producing a fault, and only a thermometer exposes it.
The owner procedure
- Clean the door switch plunger and its seat — Wipe away spills and sticky residue, and check the plunger springs back freely by hand.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and keep it unplugged while your hands are behind the rear cover: a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The sealed refrigeration circuit is not owner-serviceable — refrigerant is under pressure, the tubing is thin, and opening it is licensed work. Nothing in the sealed circuit is an owner job: it is pressurised, and the law treats venting it as a violation in its own right.
Where the owner job ends
Book a visit when the display disagrees with a thermometer inside the unit: that is a sensing fault, and it is the one that quietly spoils food. Book a visit as soon as a check needs an instrument rather than an observation, because that is the point where guessing starts costing money.
