The short answer
Most alarming refrigerator noises come from moving air, moving ice or a cabinet that is not sitting square. Most of this is diagnosis by ear, and the fixes are typically free. What you actually observe
- Cracking and popping after the cabinet has been quiet — Plastic and metal moving as temperatures change; normal in every frost-free cabinet.
- Rattling that comes and goes over minutes — Something loose vibrating in sympathy with the compressor instead of a failing part.
- A regular clicking every few minutes — Usually a relay or a defrost control operating, and normal unless it repeats every few seconds.
- NEAR MISS — a rhythmic clunk only when ice drops — That is the ice maker harvesting and it belongs on the ice-production page if it seems wrong.
The ranking that matters
- Condenser fan obstructed or bearing worn — Ranked first: This fan lives behind the lower grille where dust, pet hair and dropped objects collect, and it runs whenever the compressor does. It sits at the top here since a survivor of this vintage has typically already had one repair, and the previous repair is part of the diagnosis.
- Cabinet not level or resting on an uneven floor — Second: Levelling also cures the door faults that often arrive with the noise complaint.
- Evaporator fan blade catching frost or a bent shroud — Third: It is confirmed for free: hold the door switch in and listen, then release it and hear the noise stop.
Order of investigation
- Empty the ice bin and listen again — Loose cubes and a part-frozen bin produce knocks that are easily mistaken for a failing part.
- Open the freezer door and hold the door switch in — If the noise stops when the door opens and returns when the switch is held, it is the circulation fan and nothing else.
- Compare the display reading with a thermometer — A control acting on a wrong reading behaves perfectly while producing a fault, and only a thermometer exposes it.

- Level the cabinet and establish all four feet carry weight — Adjust the front feet until the unit does not rock and sits very slightly back.

- Empty the ice bin and reseat it — Removes the simplest source of knocking and takes a minute.

- Run a manual defrost if the noise suggests fan-on-ice — Empty the cabinet, unplug it and leave the doors open; a grinding that disappears afterwards confirms the diagnosis.

Safety
Pull the plug, or trip the breaker that feeds the outlet, before any panel comes off; a stored charge can sit in a capacitor long after the lights go out. Keep the sealed system out of scope: refrigerant lines are brazed, pressurised, and outside anything a homeowner tool set can do safely. Nothing in the sealed circuit is an owner job: it is pressurised, and the law treats venting it as a violation in its own right.
When to call a technician
Call when the noise is a grinding that returns immediately after a full defrost, since that pattern is a fan or shroud repair behind the evaporator cover. Levelling, cleaning and clearing obstructions are owner work; replacing a fan motor is not. If the appliance is within its warranty, call the dealer before opening anything at all: the cover typically ends at the first panel screw.
