An ice maker that has stopped on a Classic refrigerator is usually being starved of water, not electrically dead. The checks below are all homeowner-side, and they settle this without a part in most cases. On this kind of cabinet controls of this era are mechanical or early-electronic, so the faults announce themselves by sound and smell rather than by a code.
What you actually observe
- Cubes are small, hollow or misshapen — A partial fill: water is arriving, but not enough of it or not for long enough.
- A slab of ice has formed in the bin instead of cubes — Melt and refreeze, which points to harvest timing or a freezer that is drifting warm.
- The bin is empty and stays empty — No cubes at all over a full day, with the freezer otherwise holding temperature.
- NEAR MISS — water dispenses but ice never forms — A supply that works at the dispenser and not at the mould narrows this to the ice-maker fill branch specifically.
Causes, most likely first
- Water inlet valve failing to open fully — Ranked first: Sediment in the valve screen restricts the fill long before the valve fails outright, which is why cube size falls before production stops. It sits at the top here because controls of this era are mechanical or early-electronic, so the faults announce themselves by sound and smell rather than by a code.
- Fill tube frozen solid at the mould end — Second: A slightly slow valve leaves a drop behind after each fill, and the drop freezes at the coldest point of the tube until the path is closed.
- Freezer running warmer than it should — Third: Temperature is upstream of everything the ice maker does, which is why it is checked before any part is bought.
Order of investigation
- Look for a plug of ice in the fill tube above the mould — A torch and a warm cloth will show and clear it; a plug found here explains the whole failure.
- Run a hand along the door seal line with the door shut — Cold air escaping at a point is felt before it is seen, and it explains several unrelated-looking complaints.
- Trace the supply line behind the cabinet for kinks and a closed valve — Pull the unit out gently and follow the tube from the tap to the rear panel before anything is opened.
The owner procedure
- Clear a frozen fill tube with a warm damp cloth — Wrap the tube, wait, repeat. Do not use a metal tool or boiling water; both damage the plastic and make the next plug worse.

- Turn the supply off and on at the tap and check for flow — Close the valve, open it fully, and watch for a firm flow before the line is reconnected.

- Hand-fill the mould to test the freeze and harvest cycle — A measured cup of water, then leave it alone for several hours and come back to see whether cubes have dropped.

Power off at the breaker or at the plug first. The refrigerant circuit stays sealed: it is pressurised, it is brazed, and an amateur opening is both a hazard and a reportable release. If the fill tube refreezes within days of being cleared, stop clearing it — a repeating plug means the valve is weeping or the fill cup is misaligned, and both need a visit. Book a visit as soon as a check needs an instrument rather than an observation, because that is the point where guessing starts costing money.
