The short answer
A Classic refrigerator that runs but will not hold temperature is almost never a dead compressor — it is almost always air that has stopped moving. Work the order below and you will typically know which of the three it is before a technician is booked. On this kind of cabinet the line has been out of production long enough that every unit still running is well past its easy years.
What this looks like
- Food at the front of the shelves spoils before food at the back — A temperature gradient across the cabinet means circulation, not refrigeration capacity.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is silent and nothing is cold — No compressor sound at all is a power, start-relay or control fault, which is a different page and a different order of checks.
- Frost has formed a solid sheet on the freezer back wall — Not the usual light dusting — a continuous skin of ice over the panel that hides the coil behind it.
- Condensation collects on shelves and on the inside of the door — Warm humid air is getting in or cold air is not reaching the seal line.
The ranking that matters
- Condenser coil blanketed in dust and lint — Ranked first: Age and dust do this on their own; the coil is also the cheapest thing in the chain to put right. It sits at the top here since the line has been out of production long enough that every unit still running is well past its easy years.
- Door gasket no longer sealing along one edge — Second: A door that has been hung slightly out of square loads one gasket edge and unloads the other, which produces continuous running and frost together.

Working through it
- Feel the condenser coil and the compressor shell for heat — Continuous heat with no cycling says the system never satisfies, which points at load instead of capacity.
- Look behind the freezer rear panel for a frost sheet — If the fan runs and the panel is iced, the defrost chain is the cause and the ice is the proof.
- Read the rating plate and photograph it — It identifies the platform, which is what a parts supplier needs, and it takes a moment while the door is open anyway.

- Confirm the set point has not been changed — A control knocked to its warmest setting by a shopping bag is a real and common cause of a warm cabinet.

- Verify the cabinet is not fighting its surroundings — A unit in direct sun, beside an oven, or jammed into a cupboard with no clearance behaves exactly like one that is failing.

Safety
Power off at the breaker or at the plug first. The refrigerant circuit stays sealed: it is pressurised, it is brazed, and an amateur opening is both a hazard and a reportable release. Nothing in the sealed circuit is an owner job: it is pressurised, and the law treats venting it as a violation in its own right.
Where the owner job ends
The line is the evaporator cover. Those three findings each end the owner-side sequence. Call if the same fault has now returned twice after being apparently fixed, since the cause was clearly never the one addressed.
