Bosch/Gaggenau Dishwasher F3: Water Inlet Timeout — Fill Level Not Reached
F3 is the F-series variant of the fill timeout error. While E18 indicates a fill timeout on most Bosch models, certain Gaggenau and older Bosch Benchmark units use the F-prefix error numbering for fill system faults. F3 means the tub did not reach the minimum water level within the allotted fill time despite the inlet valve being electrically functional.
F3 vs E18: Same Problem, Different Code Families
BSH Group used two error code families across different generations and product lines:
- E-series codes: Standard on Bosch 300, 500, and 800 Series dishwashers manufactured after 2010
- F-series codes: Used on Gaggenau 400 Series, some Bosch Benchmark models, and older Siemens units
F3 and E18 indicate identical fault conditions. The diagnostic and repair procedures are the same. If your machine displays F3, follow the same troubleshooting path as E18 but note that the control board firmware is from the F-series generation.

Gaggenau-Specific Fill System Considerations
Gaggenau 400 Series dishwashers (DF461, DF481) have a water softener system built into the machine — a feature not found on standard Bosch models. This regenerating water softener uses a salt reservoir (similar to European dishwashers) that conditions incoming water before it reaches the wash cavity.
The water softener adds components to the fill path that can cause F3:
Salt reservoir blockage: If the wrong type of salt is used (table salt instead of dishwasher salt) or the salt dispenser cap is not sealed properly, dissolved salt crystals can partially block the softener's internal passages. This restricts flow enough to trigger F3.
Resin chamber exhaustion: The ion-exchange resin inside the softener has a finite capacity. If the regeneration cycle is not running properly (insufficient salt, programming error), the resin becomes saturated and swells, restricting water flow through the softener chamber.
Bypass valve stuck: The softener has a bypass valve that routes water directly to the tub when the softener is regenerating. If this valve sticks in the bypass-closed position during normal fill, all water must pass through the softener — and if the softener is partially blocked, fill time exceeds the timeout.
Diagnosis Specific to F3 on Gaggenau
Step 1: Salt System Check
Open the salt reservoir (cap is on the tub floor, usually labeled). Check:
- Salt level (should be filled to at least halfway)
- Salt type (must be coarse dishwasher salt, not table salt or rock salt)
- Cap seal condition (rubber gasket should be pliable and seated in its groove)
- Any crystallized salt deposits around the cap threads (clean with warm water)
Step 2: Water Softener Setting Verification
Gaggenau dishwashers have a water hardness setting that controls how aggressively the softener works. If set incorrectly (too high for your actual water hardness), the softener overworks and may cause flow restriction. Check your water hardness with a test strip and match the dishwasher's setting to your actual hardness level.
Step 3: Standard Fill Path Checks
If the Gaggenau salt system checks out, or if your machine is a non-Gaggenau Bosch showing F3:
- Supply valve fully open
- Supply pressure adequate (1 gallon per 30 seconds from disconnected hose)
- Inlet screen not clogged (check the mesh in the inlet port)
- AquaStop not tripped (check indicator window for red)
- Drain hose has high-loop (prevents siphoning)
- Float switch moves freely (not stuck in raised position)

Parts and Pricing
| Part | BSH Number | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Inlet valve (Gaggenau) | 00645701 | $55-$85 |
| AquaStop supply hose | 00667327 | $55-$85 |
| Water softener resin cartridge (Gaggenau) | 00497080 | $35-$55 |
| Salt reservoir cap/seal (Gaggenau) | 00166625 | $8-$15 |
Professional repair: $175-$450. Gaggenau units with integrated softeners add diagnostic complexity — expect 45-75 minutes on-site. Standard Bosch units showing F3 follow the same timeline as E18 repairs.
When F3 Indicates a Board Issue
Rarely, F3 results from the board's water level sensing circuit failing rather than an actual fill problem. If the tub visibly fills with water (you can hear and see it filling) but F3 still triggers, the pressure switch or its connecting tube may be faulty, or the board's ADC circuit for water level reading has drifted. Test the pressure switch directly before replacing the board.
