The short answer
A Black+Decker refrigerator showing this usually tells you one thing: streaks on the rear panel are normal during defrost and abnormal only when they reach the shelves. Deciding which one you have is free; the checks past that are the drain and the seal.
What you actually see
- Water pooling under the crisper drawers — Water inside the cabinet at the lowest point is the classic blocked-drain picture.
- A puddle on the floor at the front — Water at the front has usually run forward along the base and out under the door.
- Water running down the inside back wall — Streaks on the rear panel are normal during a defrost and abnormal if they reach the shelves.
Causes, ranked for this refrigerator
- Door seal letting humid air in — The usual answer. warm room air condenses the moment it touches cold surfaces, and a leaking seal supplies it continuously — the water is condensate, not a leak. Rule it in or out properly here; a maybe at this position costs an hour further down.
- Defrost drain blocked — The runner-up. it is first by a wide margin because it is the only route the water has, and blocking it puts the water exactly where owners find it. Getting a definite answer here is worth more than a quick look at the three below it.
- Frozen drain from a defrost fault — Third. when the defrost cycle underperforms, the trough fills with ice and the meltwater from the next cycle has nowhere to go. If this is the answer, the rest of the list stops mattering entirely.
What to check, in order
- First — the door seal — Look for frost or beads on the frame at one corner rather than evenly around it.
- Second — the drain hole at the back of the compartment — Find the drain hole low on the rear wall inside and check it is clear. Flush it with warm water from a turkey baster or a syringe.
Checks an owner can do safely
- Step 1. Inspect the drain tube — Follow the tube from the cabinet to the tray, looking for a split, a crush point or an end that has slipped off the tray.

- Step 2. Paper-test the door seal — Close the door on a sheet of paper every hand-width around the frame. Free-sliding paper marks where humid air is getting in.

- Step 3. Find where the water actually is — Dry everything, put a paper towel at the front, the back and inside the base, and see which one is wet first. That single observation removes most of the list.

Shut off, unplug, dry off — in that order. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Kneeling on a wet floor beside a plugged-in appliance is the one mistake on this page that has consequences beyond the repair.
