The short answer
On a Black+Decker refrigerator, no ice is usually no permission or no water rather than a broken ice maker. The first three checks take minutes and cost nothing; a module that fills and never harvests is the part that ends owner work.
What you actually see
- No ice at all after a full day — A machine that has made nothing in a day has either no water, no cold or no permission to run.
- Hollow or partly formed cubes — Half-filled cubes point at fill volume rather than at freezing.
- Cubes fused into one block in the bin — A block in the bin is a melt-and-refreeze cycle, which means the freezer section is warming between runs.

- Ice maker switched off or the arm parked up — Ranks first because every ice maker has an off position and it is the single most common reason one stops, especially on a unit that has been moved or serviced. A clean result here does not just remove one part; it removes everything that depends on it.
- No water reaching the fill valve — Second because no water is the second thing to rule out because it explains every no-ice complaint at once and costs nothing to check. It is worth being sure about this one rather than half-sure, since everything after it assumes a verdict.
- Freezer compartment not cold enough to harvest — Third because a harvest cycle waits for the mould to reach temperature, so a freezer section running warm makes no ice at all rather than making it slowly. This is the entry most often blamed correctly and diagnosed carelessly, so take the extra minute.
What to check, in order
- First — the on/off arm or switch — Take everything out of the bin and check the arm swings freely through its full travel.
- Second — the supply line and shut-off — Trace the line from the back of the cabinet to the shut-off and confirm the valve is fully open, not cracked open.

- Step 1. Confirm the ice maker is switched on — Check the wire arm or switch is in the run position and nothing in the bin is holding the arm up. This is the most common single answer.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and close the water supply valve before you loosen a hose. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water and a live cabinet are the combination that turns a small leak into an electrical fault, so power and water both come off before the towels come out.
