The short answer
On a Black+Decker refrigerator, a seal that fails the paper test is loading the machine with room air every minute of the day. Cleaning, reseating and levelling are all owner work; a split gasket or a worn hinge is a part.
What you actually see
- The door does not pull itself shut over the last inch — A door left to swing should close under its own weight from a hand-width open on a level cabinet.
- Condensation on the inside of the door frame — Beads of water on the frame mark where warm room air is meeting cold cabinet air.
- A visible gap at one corner of the closed door — Gaps almost always start at the top hinge corner or the bottom of the handle side.
Causes, ranked for this refrigerator
- Gasket compressed flat from age — Ranks first because the seal works by springing back into shape, and once the rubber has taken a set it cannot bridge the gap it used to. A clean result here does not just remove one part; it removes everything that depends on it.
- Dirt or sticky residue on the sealing face — Second because it is easy to rule out and easy to fix, so it belongs high even though it is not glamorous. It is worth being sure about this one rather than half-sure, since everything after it assumes a verdict.
- Gasket lifted out of its retaining channel — Third because the seal is pushed into a groove or held by the inner door panel, and cleaning or a hard pull can lift a section clear. This is the entry most often blamed correctly and diagnosed carelessly, so take the extra minute.
What to check, in order
- First — the gasket profile — Do the paper test every hand-width around the frame. Free-sliding paper marks the flattened section.
- Second — the sealing surface — Wipe the gasket and the frame it meets with warm soapy water and dry both. Note whether anything comes off.

- Step 1. Run the paper test around the whole door — Close the door on a sheet of paper and pull. Repeat every hand-width. Free-sliding paper marks a leak; drag means the seal is holding there.

- Step 2. Check the cabinet leans slightly back — Open the door a hand-width and let it go. It should close itself. If not, wind the front feet down until it does.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, so treat a stored charge as live even when the cord is in your hand. Do not run the machine with a panel off to watch what happens, and do not defeat any switch that cuts power when a door opens.
