The short answer
On a Black+Decker refrigerator, a warm cabinet is almost never a dead compressor — it is heat that cannot leave the machine. Two of the three most likely causes are fixed with a brush and a tape measure, so this starts as an owner job and only becomes a service call after those are ruled out.
What you actually see
- The cabinet is cool but not cold — Drinks are drinkable, butter is soft, and the thermometer sits above 40 °F (4 °C) no matter where the dial is set.
- Food spoils faster than it used to — Milk turns a day or two early and salad greens wilt, which is the earliest honest sign that the cabinet has drifted warm.
- The compressor runs constantly — A hum that never stops means the machine is asking for cold it cannot make, not that it is working hard.

- Condenser coils choked with dust — Ranks first because a compact cabinet has very little coil area to spare, so the film of dust that a full-size unit shrugs off is enough here to stop heat leaving the cabinet altogether. A clean result here does not just remove one part; it removes everything that depends on it.
- No air gap around the cabinet — Second because the installation is the most common thing that changes right before cooling stops, and a snug new spot is the most common installation change of all. It is worth being sure about this one rather than half-sure, since everything after it assumes a verdict.
- Door seal not closing the cabinet — Third because a leaking seal loads the machine with room air continuously, and a compact cabinet has no reserve capacity to absorb that load. This is the entry most often blamed correctly and diagnosed carelessly, so take the extra minute.
What to check, in order
- First — the condenser coils — Feel the coil area with the back of your hand after an hour of running. Even heat means it is shedding; a cold coil behind a hot cabinet means it is blocked.
- Second — the clearance around the cabinet — Measure nothing — just look. If you cannot get a hand behind, above and to one side of the cabinet, pull it forward and run it that way for a day.

- Step 1. Put a thermometer in the cabinet and leave it — A glass of water on the middle shelf with a thermometer in it, left for several hours, tells you the real cabinet temperature rather than the door-open temperature. A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 °F (4 °C) or below.

- Step 2. Check the clearance around the unit — Pull the cabinet forward and look at what is behind, above and beside it. Restore an air gap on at least three sides and leave it running that way overnight before you judge anything else.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The cooling circuit is sealed and under pressure: do not cut, bend, kink or unbraze any tubing, and do not attempt to add or recover refrigerant — that is licensed work and the tubing is not repairable with hand tools.
When this becomes a service call
The line is not about confidence, it is about what the next step needs. If the coil is clean, the seals hold, the fans run and the frost pattern is normal, the remaining candidates all need a meter or a gauge set on a running machine — that is service work.
