The short answer
A Black+Decker refrigerator showing this usually tells you one thing: the machine keeps up while the room is cool and loses ground once the room warms, which is a capacity problem rather than a failure. This one is almost always fixed by giving the unit somewhere to put its heat; if a full air gap and a clean coil do not change it, the load is genuinely too high for the cabinet.
What you actually see
- The cabinet is cool but not cold — Drinks are drinkable, butter is soft, and the thermometer sits above 40 °F (4 °C) no matter where the dial is set.
- Food spoils faster than it used to — Milk turns a day or two early and salad greens wilt, which is the earliest honest sign that the cabinet has drifted warm.
- The freezer section stays cold, the fresh-food section does not — A split like this points at air movement between the two compartments rather than at cooling capacity.
Causes, ranked for this refrigerator
- No air gap around the cabinet — The usual answer. these units are small enough to be pushed into a cupboard, a cabinet cut-out or a corner, and a unit with no air gap cannot dump its heat anywhere. Rule it in or out properly here; a maybe at this position costs an hour further down.
- Condenser coils choked with dust — The runner-up. heat has to leave through the coil, and on a small unit the coil is small too — once it is furred over, the compressor runs without ever winning. Getting a definite answer here is worth more than a quick look at the three below it.
- Door seal not closing the cabinet — Third. a leaking seal loads the machine with room air continuously, and a compact cabinet has no reserve capacity to absorb that load. If this is the answer, the rest of the list stops mattering entirely.
What to check, in order
- First — the clearance around the cabinet — Check what is above and behind. A shelf sitting on the top panel or a wall against the back turns the cabinet into its own oven.
- Second — the condenser coils — Pull the unit out, look at the coil at the back or under the base, and run a dry brush over it. A coil you cannot see the fins through is the answer.

- Step 1. Look at the evaporator panel for frost — Empty the freezer section and look at the inner rear panel. Light even frost is normal; a solid sheet is a defrost fault and blocks all airflow behind it.

Disconnect the supply first. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The pressurised circuit stays sealed: it is diagnosed with gauges by somebody licensed to recover what is inside it, never by opening a line to see what comes out.
