The short answer
Read the machine before you read the manual — on a Black+Decker refrigerator, the compressor most likely failed to restart against a still-pressurised system rather than failing outright. Give it a proper rest and a clean restart before assuming damage; if it still will not run after that, the start components are next and they are a technician part.
What you actually see
- The freezer section stays cold, the fresh-food section does not — A split like this points at air movement between the two compartments rather than at cooling capacity.
- The back wall inside is frosted solid — A sheet of ice on the inner rear panel blocks the airflow that is supposed to carry cold forward.
- The outside of the cabinet is hot to the touch — Warm sides are normal; hot sides mean the heat is not getting away from the condenser.

- Start relay or overload protector failed — Top of the list: this is the failure that stops a compressor dead while leaving the light, the fan and the control working normally. Confirm it before moving on, because the entries below read differently once it is ruled out.
- Thermostat or temperature sensor out of calibration — Next: a compact unit usually runs a mechanical thermostat with a capillary bulb rather than a board and a thermistor, and a bulb that has shifted off its bracket reads the wrong air. - Second — the thermostat setting and sensor — Look for the sensing bulb clipped to the evaporator or the air duct. If it has come off its clip, it is reading room air and the machine believes it is done.

- Step 1. Check the clearance around the unit — Pull the cabinet forward and look at what is behind, above and beside it. Restore an air gap on at least three sides and leave it running that way overnight before you judge anything else.

- Step 2. Clean the condenser coil — Unplug the unit. Brush and vacuum the coil at the back or under the base until you can see the fins. Do not bend them; a soft brush and a nozzle are enough.

Safety
Unplug the unit before removing a panel, and keep in mind that a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Anything that would breach the sealed circuit — a kinked line straightened, a joint disturbed, a valve fitted — stops being an owner job at that moment.
When this becomes a service call
The line is not about confidence, it is about what the next step needs. The moment the next step would be measuring a winding, discharging a capacitor or touching the refrigerant tubing, stop; those are licensed or trained tasks and the machine has to be running for them.
