The short answer
Read the machine before you read the manual — on a Black+Decker refrigerator, a rattle is contact between two things that should not be touching, and it is almost always outside the sealed system. A rattle is an owner fix in the overwhelming majority of cases; the exception is a fan blade that has worn its bearing rather than picked up debris.
What you actually see
- A grinding or scraping from the freezer section — Ice touching a fan blade makes a sound that changes as the blade cuts into it.
- A hum you can feel through the floor — Vibration transmitted into a floor is usually the cabinet, the feet or the surface under it rather than the machine.
- A knock when the compressor shuts off — A single knock at shutdown is the compressor rocking on its mounts and settling.
Causes, ranked for this refrigerator
- Something touching the back of the cabinet — Top of the list: on a small unit the back is crowded, so any item stored behind or beside the cabinet ends up in contact with a part that vibrates. Confirm it before moving on, because the entries below read differently once it is ruled out.
- Drip tray loose in its channel — Next: the tray is a light plastic part sitting near the compressor, and once it slides out of its channel it buzzes against the frame. Rule it in or out properly here; a maybe at this position costs an hour further down.
- Cabinet not level or resting on three feet — Then: weight is what damps vibration, and these cabinets do not have much of it, so a levelling error that a heavy unit would absorb becomes audible here. Getting a definite answer here is worth more than a quick look at the three below it.
What to check, in order
- First — the space behind the cabinet — Unplug the unit, pull it out, and look at what is touching the coil, the compressor and the tubing. Move each thing a finger-width clear.
- Second — the drip tray under the cabinet — Wedge a folded cloth beside the tray for a minute as a test. If the noise stops, you have found it.
Checks an owner can do safely
- Step 1. Level the cabinet — Push each front corner down in turn. Adjust the foot under any corner that moves until all four are loaded, then run the unit and listen again.

- Step 2. Clear the space behind and beside — Unplug the unit and pull it out. Move anything touching the back panel, the coil, the tubing or the cord clear by a finger-width.
