The short answer for MAS models
Most alarming noises from an Avanti MAS washer come from foreign objects and installation rather than from failure. A coin in the outer tub rattles on every turn, a machine on three feet walks, and a pump with a button in it grinds. All three are owner-findable.
What owners describe
- A metallic rattle on every drum rotation — Where MAS models are concerned, rotation-linked noise means a foreign object, and it will keep damaging the drum until it is out.
- A grinding or gravel noise during drain — Where MAS models are concerned, drain-stage noise points at the pump path, which is behind the filter hatch.
- A knocking at the start of every spin, then quiet — Where MAS models are concerned, the load redistributing, which is normal, or the suspension letting the tub touch the cabinet, which is not.
- A hum with no drum movement at all — On MAS models in particular, a motor or a belt that has failed, or a drum jammed by something, which is a different fault.
- Thumping and walking only during the spin — Across the MAS line, spin-only noise is nearly always balance and installation rather than a failed part.
- NEAR MISS — noise only at drain, with water left in the drum — Then this is really a drainage fault. Open the filter and read the drainage-failure page.
Ranked causes on the MAS line
- An unbalanced load — It leads because a single heavy item — a towel, a mat, a duvet — puts the drum out of balance and the machine has no way to fix it.
- Transit bolts or packing left in place — It belongs here because it is the first thing to ask about any newly-noisy relocated machine. The MAS models in the table below are no exception.
- Transit bolts or packing never removed at installation — A machine still bolted for transport cannot isolate the drum, so every spin is transmitted straight into the cabinet.
- A failing drum bearing or a worn belt — It comes last because everything cheaper imitates it, and because bearing work is a major repair on most machines. The MAS models in the table below are no exception.
Work through these in order
- Open the door and redistribute the load by hand — On an MAS model, if the spin then runs quietly, the fault was the load and nothing needs repairing.
- Push each top corner and check for rock — Any movement means a foot is off the floor, which is the second commonest cause of the whole fault.
- Feel right round the drum and the seal folds by hand — Across the MAS line, coins, buttons, wire and screws collect in the folds of the door seal and at the bottom of the drum.
- Rock the machine at each corner in turn — Where MAS models are concerned, every foot should be carrying weight, and the cabinet should not move when you push it.
Read this before you start
Safety
Isolate at the plug first; a capacitor can stay charged after the power is off. A machine that walks during the spin can trap fingers against a wall or a cabinet, so stop the cycle before adjusting anything. Wear gloves when feeling round the drum lip: broken underwires and screws are sharp.

When to hand it over
Hand it over once the free checks are done, and tell the technician exactly when the noise happens: every rotation, only at spin, only at drain, or rising with speed. Those four answers map onto four different parts of the machine and they shorten the visit considerably.
