Start here, for FLW models
An Avanti FLW washer that has become noisy is usually telling you about its load, its level or its feet — not its bearings. These machines are light, and during a spin they generate forces they can only handle if all four feet are down and the load is spread. Fix the easy causes and most noise goes.
What you notice first
- A hard knock once per revolution at low speed — Across the FLW line, a knock that keeps time with the drum is nearly always the load or an object in it.
- A grinding or gravel noise during drain — On an FLW model, drain-stage noise points at the pump path, which is behind the filter hatch.
- A hum with no drum movement at all — On every FLW model in the table, a motor or a belt that has failed, or a drum jammed by something, which is a different fault.
- The machine walks across the floor during spin — On the FLW models listed below, levelling, transit bolts still fitted, or a floor that flexes — all of which read as noise.
- The machine moves across the floor during the spin — In the FLW family, feet not adjusted, a slippery floor, or a load that will not distribute.
- NEAR MISS — noise only at drain, with water left in the drum — Then this is really a drainage fault. Open the filter and read the drainage-failure page.
What actually fails on FLW models, in order
- An unbalanced load — First, because it is the most common by a wide margin and it needs nothing but a rearranged drum.
- Debris in the pump housing — Mid-list because the access is the filter hatch, which the maker intends the owner to open. The same order applies across the FLW family.
- Worn suspension, dampers or springs — The tub no longer settles, so it knocks the cabinet at every spin and walks even when level.
- A failing drum bearing or a worn belt — It comes last because everything cheaper imitates it, and because bearing work is a major repair on most machines. That is the position it takes on this family.
Check in this order, and why
- Open the door and redistribute the load by hand — On an FLW model, if the spin then runs quietly, the fault was the load and nothing needs repairing.
- Push each top corner and check for rock — Level it in both directions and make sure the lock nuts are tight against the cabinet.
- Run a spin-only cycle on an empty drum — Noise with nothing in the machine removes the load from the equation entirely.
- Check behind the machine for transit bolts or packing — A machine still bolted for transport cannot isolate its own drum.
Read this before you start
Safety
Isolate at the plug first; a capacitor can stay charged after the power is off. A machine that walks during the spin can trap fingers against a wall or a cabinet, so stop the cycle before adjusting anything. Wear gloves when feeling round the drum lip: broken underwires and screws are sharp.

When this stops being an owner job
The owner line is the load, the feet, the drum interior and the filter. Suspension dampers, springs, belts and drum bearings sit behind it. Call sooner if the machine has started moving across the floor, because a walking machine damages its own hoses and connections.
