The WCDE answer in short
An Avanti WCDE refrigerator that runs without getting cold is almost never a dead compressor. On this kind of machine the airflow path stalls first: the evaporator behind the rear panel ices into a sheet, the fan can no longer push air past it, and the cabinet drifts warm while the unit hums away. Two of the three likely causes are owner-checkable in minutes.
Signs you can observe
- The cabinet is warm but the unit is plainly running — In the WCDE family, you can hear the compressor and feel warmth at the back, yet the air inside is barely cool.
- Condensation or sweating on the outside of the cabinet — On the WCDE models listed below, a door that no longer seals lets humid room air in continuously and the unit cannot win against it.
- The compressor runs constantly and never cycles off — Looking at WCDE models specifically, a unit that never rests is working hard for nothing, and that is measurable on the bill before it is obvious in the cabinet.
- The freezer section still makes ice but the fresh-food side is warm — On the WCDE line, cold is being produced and not distributed, which is the airflow reading rather than a refrigerant one.
- NEAR MISS — the unit is silent and nothing is cold — That is a no-power, start-relay or control fault, and it is a different page. If you hear nothing at all, go there instead.
What actually fails on WCDE models, in order
- A stalled defrost cycle icing the evaporator — Ranked here because adaptive defrost stalls quietly long before it fails outright: the ice sheet grows over weeks and the owner notices warmth, never frost.
- A condenser coil blanketed in dust — High on the list because these machines are built into cabinetry or pushed against a wall, and the coil is the part nobody ever cleans. It keeps that place on the WCDE line.
- A stopped or dying evaporator fan motor — The fan is the wear part behind the rear panel, and when it stops the cabinet warms with nothing to show for it — no frost sheet, no noise.
- A sealed-system or compressor fault — Last, and that ordering is the point: it is the least common cause and the only one that is not an owner fix. On the WCDE models below the ranking is the same.
The order to work in
- Open the door and listen for the circulating fan — For WCDE models, it separates the two likeliest causes before a single tool comes out: air moving means the fan is alive.
- Look at the rear panel for a frost sheet — If the fan is running, frost is the next question: a slab there confirms the defrost cause.
- Measure the gap behind and above the cabinet by eye — Within the WCDE family, these units reject heat into the room, and a tight alcove starves that.

Safety
Pull the plug or trip the breaker first — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Two people move a loaded cabinet, not one: these machines are top-heavy with the door open, and a dropped cabinet flattens the condenser tubing. Keep the door switch and its harness intact throughout.
