Start here, for WCDE models
The useful question on a noisy Avanti WCDE refrigerator is not "which part is it" but "does the noise change when the fan stops". Open the door and the evaporator fan cuts; the condenser fan and compressor keep going. That one test splits the possible sources in half, costs nothing, and is where this page starts.
Signs you can observe
- A buzz that follows the ice maker filling — In the WCDE family, the fill valve, and it is the one noise in a refrigerator that has a simple owner test.
- A knock once or twice a day and never otherwise — On the WCDE line, noise that keeps a schedule is usually the machine working, not failing.
- Vibration you can feel in the floor or the worktop — On this family, a cabinet out of level walks on two feet and drums into whatever it is touching.
- Gurgling, trickling or a soft pop after it cycles off — Across the WCDE line, refrigerant settling and the defrost water moving are both normal and neither needs fixing.
- The noise stops when you open the door — On WCDE models, this is the single most useful test on the page and it takes a second.

What actually fails on WCDE models, in order
- A cabinet that is not level or is resting on cabinetry — First, because these are light machines with adjustable feet and they are almost always installed in a hurry into a tight space.
- Perished compressor mounting grommets — Ranked mid-list: it is real, it is age-related, and it is a technician job rather than an owner one. It is ranked the same way on every WCDE model.
- Something touching the cabinet or a loose panel — A bottle against the back wall, a tray on top, a rear panel that has worked loose — any of them turns the case into a soundboard.
- A failing compressor — It comes last because every cheaper cause imitates it, and only a technician with instruments should call it. That holds for every WCDE model listed here.
Check in this order, and why
- Open the door and listen for the noise to stop — On WCDE models, the door switch cuts the evaporator fan, so a noise that dies with the door open is that fan and nothing else.
- Pull the machine out and look behind the rear cover — In the WCDE family, dust balls on the condenser fan, a bent blade and rub marks on the shroud are all visible in a moment.
- Look for a frost sheet on the rear wall inside the freezer — A fan striking ice ties the noise to a defrost fault and changes what needs fixing.
- Note when the noise happens and how long it lasts — On this family, write the times down for a day: a pattern turns a mystery into a normal function.
Read this before you start
Safety
Isolate at the plug or the breaker first; a capacitor can stay charged after the power is off. Rear covers on these cabinets hide sharp fin edges, so wear gloves. If you move the machine to get behind it, walk it on its feet with a second pair of hands rather than dragging it on the tubing.

When this stops being an owner job
Call when the load is clear of the walls, nothing rests on top, the unit is level and carrying its weight on its feet, and a grinding or screeching noise is still there. What remains is a fan motor or a compressor bearing, and both mean panels off with mains inside.
