Start here, for WCV models
When an Avanti WCV refrigerator hums but the shelves are warm, the fault is usually in how cold air moves rather than in how it is made. A stalled defrost, a blocked condenser or a stopped circulating fan all read as the same warm cabinet, and they separate in that order on these machines. Only the last of the three is licensed work.
What the owner sees
- Food safety is already marginal — On this family, milk sours early and lettuce wilts within a day — the cabinet is above the safe holding temperature.
- The compressor runs and never stops — For the WCV line, continuous running with no cycling off is the same fault seen from the electrical side.
- Condensation or sweating on the outside of the cabinet — On the WCV line, a door that no longer seals lets humid room air in continuously and the unit cannot win against it.
- The freezer section still makes ice but the fresh-food side is warm — For the WCV line, a split like this points at the duct or the fan between the two sections, not at the compressor.
- The cabinet is warm but the unit is plainly running — Within the WCV family, you can hear the compressor and feel warmth at the back, yet the air inside is barely cool.
- NEAR MISS — the unit is silent and nothing is cold — That is a no-power, start-relay or control fault, and it is a different page. If you hear nothing at all, go there instead.
Likely causes for WCV models, most common first
- A stalled defrost cycle icing the evaporator — It leads on these cabinets because the evaporator sits directly behind the rear panel with very little clearance, so even a thin sheet closes the air path completely.
- A stuck air damper between the compartments — It sits low here because it only explains the split complaint, not a cabinet that is warm throughout. That holds for every WCV model listed here.

When this stops being an owner job
The owner half of this fault is everything you can reach without a tool: clearance, loading, seals, vents and the condenser. Past that the diagnosis needs gauges on a sealed system, which is licensed work. Call sooner if the unit is tripping its breaker or the compressor is hot enough to smell.
