The short answer for SGD models
Noise from an Avanti SGD dryer is worth identifying rather than tolerating, because the cheap causes and the expensive ones sound different. A rhythmic thump is a roller or a flat spot on the belt; a continuous squeal is the idler; a scrape that changes with the load is the drum touching the bulkhead.
What it looks like from the outside
- Noise only while the drum coasts to a stop — A worn glide or a loose drum seal touching intermittently.
- A knocking from the rear of the cabinet — The rear bearing or the blower wheel, both behind the drum.
- A hum with the drum stationary — The motor running against a seized drum or a broken belt.
- A rumble that has grown over months — Support rollers wearing evenly, which is the normal end of their life.
- NEAR MISS — clothes come out damp as well — Then heating or airflow is the fault and the noise is secondary.
Causes on SGD, most likely first
- Drum support rollers worn — Ranked first on this class because they carry the whole drum, they are consumable, and they give plenty of warning as they flatten.
- Idler pulley bearing dry — Second: it is the commonest source of a continuous squeal and it is the part under constant belt tension.
- Exhaust duct loose behind the machine — A rattle that sounds like it is inside the machine and is not.
- Machine not level on the floor — The cheapest check available and a surprisingly common cause of a drumming cabinet.
Check in this order, and why
- Where to begin — Work down this list rather than starting where the fault seems loudest.
- Open the door mid-cycle and turn the drum by hand — Roughness or a catch you can feel is worth more than any amount of listening.
- Listen at the back of the cabinet rather than the front — A rear bearing and a front glide sound similar from the front and completely different from behind.
- Empty the drum completely and run it for a minute — It separates coins and buttons from every mechanical cause on this list in the cheapest possible way.
- Pull the lint filter and look into its housing with a torch — Coins live there, and they rattle exactly like something far more serious.
Gas, power and lint — isolate in that order

If you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or the emergency number from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself. Otherwise, close the gas shut-off valve behind the dryer and switch off the breaker or unplug before any panel comes off; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.

When to call a technician
Call when the airflow path is proved clear and the fault stands, or the moment a protective device has operated: a thermal fuse that opens is reporting an overheat, and replacing it without finding the restriction repeats the fault at the same risk. Call the same day if there has been a burning smell, and do not run the machine again in the meantime.
