The short answer for SGD models
An Avanti SGD dryer that ends its cycle early with the clothes still damp is usually a sensing problem, not a heating one. Moisture sensors read wet laundry through contact; fabric softener residue on the sensor bars insulates them and the machine decides the load is dry long before it is.
What it looks like from the outside
- Cycles got gradually longer over a year — Accumulation in the duct rather than any single component failing.
- The cycle time shown jumps around during a run — The machine is re-estimating continuously against an unstable sensor reading.
- The cycle runs for hours and never completes — Airflow: moisture is not leaving, so the sensor never sees a dry load.
- The vent hood outside barely puffs — The most direct evidence of a restricted duct you can get from outside.
- NEAR MISS — the machine will not begin a cycle — That is a start fault and nothing here applies to it.
What actually fails on these models, in order
- Moisture sensor bars coated with softener residue — Ranked first for early-stopping cycles because fabric softener and dryer sheets leave an insulating film exactly where the machine takes its reading.
- Exhaust duct restricted with lint — The commonest cause of cycles that never end, and the one with a fire risk attached to it.
- Control board misreading the sensor — Last on the list and the only one that cannot be confirmed without a technician.
- Sensor circuit or control miscalibrated — Suspect this only once the bars are clean and the duct is clear.
Check in this order, and why
- Before anything else — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: two of the four causes above cost nothing to rule out on SGD models, so they come first.
- Note whether cycle times grew gradually — Gradual growth is accumulation; a sudden change is a component.
- Open the drum and find the sensor bars — They are usually two metal strips near the lint opening.
- Disconnect the duct and run the machine briefly — A cycle that behaves normally venting into the room proves the duct is the fault.
Before touching a gas dryer
Safety
If you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or the emergency number from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself. Otherwise isolate both services — the gas valve behind the dryer and the breaker or plug — and remember a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never bypass a thermal fuse, and never restart a machine with a restricted duct.

When to call a technician
Call when the airflow path is proved clear and the fault stands, or the moment a protective device has operated: a thermal fuse that opens is reporting an overheat, and replacing it without finding the restriction repeats the fault at the same risk. Call the same day if there has been a burning smell, and do not run the machine again in the meantime.
