The short answer for SED models
An Avanti SED dryer that has turned noisy is telling you about the parts that carry the drum: the rollers it turns on, the idler pulley that tensions the belt, and the glides at the front. All three wear, all three are consumable, and the sound each makes is different enough to identify from outside the machine.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- A scraping that changes as the load shifts — The drum riding low and touching the front or rear bulkhead.
- A continuous high squeal that rises with the drum — The idler pulley bearing, which is the commonest squeal on this class.
- A rhythmic thump once per drum revolution — A flat spot on a support roller, or something caught between the drum and the bulkhead.
- A buzzing from the base of the machine — The blower wheel catching lint or a foreign object in the fan housing.
- NEAR MISS — clothes come out damp as well — Then heating or airflow is the fault and the noise is secondary.
The ranking for this family
- Drum support rollers worn — Ranked first on this class because they carry the whole drum, they are consumable, and they give plenty of warning as they flatten.
- Motor bearing failing — Last and least likely, and it usually arrives with a hum rather than a knock.
- Belt worn or developing a flat — A regular thump that keeps time with the belt rather than with the drum.
- Idler pulley bearing dry — Second: it is the commonest source of a continuous squeal and it is the part under constant belt tension.
Working through it in order
- Before anything else — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: zero of the four causes above cost nothing to rule out on SED models, so they come first.
- Note whether the noise persists while the drum coasts to a stop — Noise that continues while the motor is off is mechanical drag rather than motor noise.
- Check the machine is level at all four corners — An unloaded foot lets the cabinet drum and amplifies everything else.
- Decide whether the noise keeps time with the drum — A once-per-revolution thump is a roller or a flat; a continuous noise is a bearing.
Isolate it, and never bypass the protection
Safety
Switch the breaker off or pull the plug before any panel is disturbed, and treat the capacitor as charged. On a dryer the protective devices — thermal fuse, high-limit, cycling thermostat — exist because lint and heat share a cabinet. Bypassing one to get a load dried removes the protection that stops a restricted machine becoming a fire.

When to call a technician
Call a technician once the duct is clear and the machine still will not heat, or will not turn, or will not finish a cycle. Call immediately if the machine has tripped a breaker more than once or if the cabinet smells hot: those are not performance faults and they do not wait.
