The short answer for FLD models
On an Avanti FLD dryer, noise almost always arrives gradually. A roller that has started to flatten gets louder over weeks, and the machine keeps working throughout. That is useful: it means there is time to identify it properly rather than guessing.
What it looks like from the outside
- A metallic clink at the start of each cycle only — Something in the lint trap housing that settles once the airflow picks up.
- A rattle that stops when the machine is empty — Coins, buttons or a zip in the drum or the lint trap housing.
- A scraping that changes as the load shifts — The drum riding low and touching the front or rear bulkhead.
- A continuous high squeal that rises with the drum — The idler pulley bearing, which is the commonest squeal on this class.
- NEAR MISS — clothes come out damp as well — Then heating or airflow is the fault and the noise is secondary.
Likely causes on FLD, ordered
- Drum support rollers worn — Ranked first on this class because they carry the whole drum, they are consumable, and they give plenty of warning as they flatten.
- Blower wheel fouled with lint or an object — A buzz or a clatter from low in the cabinet, and it costs airflow as well as quiet.
- Exhaust duct loose behind the machine — A rattle that sounds like it is inside the machine and is not.
- Drum glides worn at the front — The drum drops slightly and touches the bulkhead, which is the scraping sound.
Check in this order, and why
- Start with what the ranking makes most likely — On FLD models, one of the four causes above are checkable without a panel coming off, and this order puts every one of them before anything that is not.
- Decide whether the noise keeps time with the drum — A once-per-revolution thump is a roller or a flat; a continuous noise is a bearing.
- Check the exhaust duct connection behind the machine — A loose duct rattles against the cabinet and sounds internal.
- Pull the lint filter and look into its housing with a torch — Coins live there, and they rattle exactly like something far more serious.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The specific hazard of a dryer is lint: it is fuel, and it collects exactly where the heat is, so a machine that has been running hot with a restricted duct should be cleared rather than restarted. Never bypass a thermal fuse or a door switch — the fuse is what stands between a blocked duct and a fire.

When to call a technician
The line on this appliance is the fixed panel. The filter, its housing, the duct, the vent hood, levelling and load size are yours. The fuse, the element, the thermostats, the rollers, the idler and the motor are not. Call promptly after any burning smell or any scorch mark, because lint and heat in one cabinet is the specific hazard this class carries.
