The short answer for SGD models
An Avanti SGD dryer that hums when you press start but does not turn is a mechanically different fault from one that does nothing at all. The hum means the motor is being powered and cannot turn the drum, which points at a broken belt or a seized blower rather than at anything electrical.
What you actually observe
- A click when start is pressed and nothing more — A relay or the motor start circuit operating against a fault.
- The breaker trips when start is pressed — An electrical fault, and it should not be reset repeatedly.
- Nothing happens at all when start is pressed — No power, no door switch, or the start switch itself.
- The panel is lit but nothing responds — Power is present and something is inhibiting the start.
- NEAR MISS — it makes a noise but completes the cycle — Then it is starting, and the noise page is the right one.

- Door switch not making — Ranked first because it gates everything and because it is operated thousands of times a year by a slammed door.
- Thermal fuse open — On many machines the fuse kills the motor circuit too, so a blocked vent can stop the machine starting.
- Drive belt broken — Produces a hum with a free-turning drum, which is a definite answer without any panel coming off.
- Blower wheel or drum seized — Something jammed in the blower housing stops the motor turning at all.
The order that saves the most time
- Start with what the ranking makes most likely — On SGD models, one of the four causes above are checkable without a panel coming off, and this order puts every one of them before anything that is not.
- Press start and classify what you hear: nothing, a hum, or a click — Those three sounds lead to three different halves of this list and cost nothing to tell apart.
- Look for a child lock or a delay indicator on the panel — A locked machine ignores every press exactly as designed.
- Check whether the vent is blocked — On many machines the thermal fuse kills the motor circuit as well as the heat.
Before touching a gas dryer

If you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or the emergency number from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself. Otherwise isolate both services — the gas valve behind the dryer and the breaker or plug — and remember a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never bypass a thermal fuse, and never restart a machine with a restricted duct.
