The short answer for SGD models
An Avanti SGD dryer that tumbles but does not heat has a short and reliable list behind it. On an electric machine, one half of a two-phase supply can be lost while the drum still turns; on a gas machine, the igniter or the gas valve.
What it looks like from the outside
- The breaker feels warm or has tripped — On an electric machine this points at the supply rather than at the appliance.
- The drum turns normally but the air is cold — The defining symptom, and it rules out the motor and the belt immediately.
- Heat on one cycle setting and not on another — Some settings run at lower temperature, so a partial heating failure shows up on only some of them.
- On a gas machine, no click or whoosh at the start — The igniter or the gas valve rather than anything electrical.
- NEAR MISS — it heats but the cycle never ends — That is an airflow and sensing fault, covered on the cycle-fault page.
What actually fails on these models, in order
- Thermal fuse opened by a restricted exhaust — Ranked first because it is a one-shot safety device and because the restriction that opened it is still there after it is replaced.
- High-limit thermostat tripped — Another protective device responding to the same restricted airflow.
- Exhaust duct or vent hood blocked with lint — Second and the underlying cause of most of the first: the machine cannot shed heat, so its protection operates.
- Heating element open circuit — The straightforward electric failure, and less common than the fuse that protects it.
- Cycling thermostat failed open — Heat that stops after a few minutes and returns later points here.
The order that saves the most time
- Before anything else — This order exists because the cheap causes are also the likely ones: one of the five named above can be settled on SGD models before a tool comes out.
- Go outside and check the vent hood flap opens — Nests and paint hold it shut, and a shut flap is a complete restriction.
- Confirm the drum turns and the air is genuinely cold — It separates this fault from a motor fault in the first ten seconds.
- On a gas machine, listen for the igniter and the valve at the start — A click and a whoosh is right; silence points at the igniter, a glow with no whoosh at the valve.
Gas, power and lint — isolate in that order
Safety
If you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or the emergency number from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself. Otherwise, close the gas shut-off valve behind the dryer and switch off the breaker or unplug before any panel comes off; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.
