The short answer for SED models
An Avanti SED dryer that tumbles but does not heat has a short and reliable list behind it. On an electric machine, one half of a two-phase supply can be lost while the drum still turns; on a gas machine, the igniter or the gas valve.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- A burning or scorched smell before the heat stopped — Lint reaching a hot surface, and it is a reason to stop using the machine now.
- Heat on one cycle setting and not on another — Some settings run at lower temperature, so a partial heating failure shows up on only some of them.
- The machine heats for a few minutes then goes cold — A thermal cut-out opening on temperature and resetting as it cools.
- Clothes come out exactly as wet as they went in — No evaporation at all, which means no heat rather than poor airflow.
- NEAR MISS — it heats but the cycle never ends — That is an airflow and sensing fault, covered on the cycle-fault page.
The ranking for this family
- Thermal fuse opened by a restricted exhaust — Ranked first because it is a one-shot safety device and because the restriction that opened it is still there after it is replaced.
- Heating element open circuit — The straightforward electric failure, and less common than the fuse that protects it.
- Exhaust duct or vent hood blocked with lint — Second and the underlying cause of most of the first: the machine cannot shed heat, so its protection operates.
- High-limit thermostat tripped — Another protective device responding to the same restricted airflow.
Check in this order, and why
- Where to begin — On SED models, one of the four causes above are checkable without a panel coming off, and this order puts every one of them before anything that is not.
- On a gas machine, listen for the igniter and the valve at the start — A click and a whoosh is right; silence points at the igniter, a glow with no whoosh at the valve.
- On an electric machine, check the breaker at both poles — Losing one pole turns the drum and leaves the heater dead, which is exactly what you are seeing.
- Go outside and check the vent hood flap opens — Nests and paint hold it shut, and a shut flap is a complete restriction.
Before you open the cabinet
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The specific hazard of a dryer is lint: it is fuel, and it collects exactly where the heat is, so a machine that has been running hot with a restricted duct should be cleared rather than restarted.

When to call a technician
Call a technician once the duct is clear and the machine still will not heat, or will not turn, or will not finish a cycle. Call immediately if the machine has tripped a breaker more than once or if the cabinet smells hot: those are not performance faults and they do not wait.
