The short answer for SED models
When an Avanti SED dryer runs forever without finishing, the issue is almost always airflow. The machine keeps going because the load is not drying, and the load is not drying because the lint filter, the duct or the vent hood is restricting the air that carries moisture away.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- The machine shuts off and restarts on its own — A thermal cut-out cycling on a restricted airflow path.
- Clothes are hot at the end but still damp — Heat is present and the moisture has nowhere to go.
- The cycle stops after a few minutes with the load still wet — Classic sensing fault: the machine believes the load is dry.
- Cycles got gradually longer over a year — Accumulation in the duct rather than any single component failing.
- NEAR MISS — there is no heat at all — That is a heating failure and it is a different page and a different list.
What actually fails on these models, in order
- Moisture sensor bars coated with softener residue — Ranked first for early-stopping cycles because fabric softener and dryer sheets leave an insulating film exactly where the machine takes its reading.
- Thermal cut-out cycling on restricted airflow — The machine protecting itself, which reads as a cycle that stops and restarts.
- Lint filter blinded by a film — Second: a filter that looks clean can be sealed by softener residue, and it starves the airflow that carries moisture away.
- Overloading the drum — Clothes that cannot tumble cannot present a wet surface to the airflow or to the sensor.
Working through it in order
- Where to begin — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: three of the four causes above cost nothing to rule out on SED models, so they come first.
- Hold the lint filter under a running tap — Water that pools on the mesh rather than running through means the filter is sealed by residue.
- Feel whether the clothes come out hot but damp — Heat plus damp is airflow every time, not heating.
- Run a timed cycle and compare it with an automatic one — If timed dry works and automatic does not, the fault is in the sensing and nothing else needs testing.
Isolate it, and never bypass the protection
Safety
Switch the breaker off or pull the plug before any panel is disturbed, and treat the capacitor as charged. On a dryer the protective devices — thermal fuse, high-limit, cycling thermostat — exist because lint and heat share a cabinet. Bypassing one to get a load dried removes the protection that stops a restricted machine becoming a fire. Clear the duct instead.

When to call a technician
The line on this appliance is the fixed panel. The filter, its housing, the duct, the vent hood, levelling and load size are yours. The fuse, the element, the thermostats, the rollers, the idler and the motor are not. Call promptly after any burning smell or any scorch mark, because lint and heat in one cabinet is the specific hazard this class carries.
