The short answer for SED models
When an Avanti SED dryer refuses to start, the door switch is the first suspect. It has to make before anything else is allowed to happen, and it is operated thousands of times a year by a door that is slammed rather than closed.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- The drum turns freely by hand with no belt tension — A broken belt, which is a definite answer from outside the machine.
- A hum with the drum stationary — The motor is powered and cannot turn the drum.
- A click when start is pressed and nothing more — A relay or the motor start circuit operating against a fault.
- The breaker trips when start is pressed — An electrical fault, and it should not be reset repeatedly.
- NEAR MISS — it runs but does not heat — That is a heating fault and it is a different page.
Likely causes on SED, ordered
- Door switch not making — Ranked first because it gates everything and because it is operated thousands of times a year by a slammed door.
- Control board failure — Last on the list and a diagnosis reached by exclusion rather than by test.
- Start switch worn — It has to make momentarily and it is the second most operated switch on the machine.
- Thermal fuse open — On many machines the fuse kills the motor circuit too, so a blocked vent can stop the machine starting.
Working through it in order
- Start with what the ranking makes most likely — This order exists because the cheap causes are also the likely ones: one of the four named above can be settled on SED models before a tool comes out.
- Turn the drum by hand and feel for belt tension — A drum that spins freely with no resistance is a broken belt.
- Listen for whether the noise stops the moment you release the button — A start switch that must be held points at the run circuit rather than the start circuit.
- Check the socket with something else, or check the breaker — A dead circuit makes everything below pointless.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The specific hazard of a dryer is lint: it is fuel, and it collects exactly where the heat is, so a machine that has been running hot with a restricted duct should be cleared rather than restarted. Never bypass a thermal fuse or a door switch — the fuse is what stands between a blocked duct and a fire.

When to call a technician
The line on this appliance is the fixed panel. The filter, its housing, the duct, the vent hood, levelling and load size are yours. The fuse, the element, the thermostats, the rollers, the idler and the motor are not. Call promptly after any burning smell or any scorch mark, because lint and heat in one cabinet is the specific hazard this class carries.
