The answer first
On a Whirlpool oven, or 5A7 is not a fault. It is the display telling you Sabbath Mode is switched on, which holds the oven in a Bake setting until it is turned off.

|---|---|
| or 5A7 | The Sabbath Mode is enabled. Sabbath Mode sets the oven to remain on in a Bake setting until turned off. |
What you observe
- The oven stays on in Bake and ignores the timer — Automatic shut-off is suspended in this mode, which is the point of it.
- Only one function is affected while the rest behave normally — That split places the fault in one circuit rather than in the supply or the main control, and it costs nothing to establish.
- NEAR MISS — the oven heats and cannot be switched off at all — An oven that keeps heating after the mode is cancelled and the controls are off is a relay or control fault, and that is a genuine service call.
Ranked causes
- Sabbath Mode was switched on — Ranked first because it is the entire explanation. The mode is entered deliberately from the control panel, usually by holding a key combination.
- It was entered accidentally by holding a key — The entry sequence on many models is a held key or a pair of keys, which is why it is sometimes switched on by someone cleaning the panel.
- The panel is faulty and only appears to be in the mode — Last: a panel that has lost its tones and its display for another reason can resemble the mode, and that is told apart by trying to cancel it.
What to check first, and why
- Check the display for the mode indicator — Most models show something specific while the mode is active. That indicator is the difference between this and a failed panel.
- Check whether more than one code is stored — Where several codes from one family appear together, they are usually a single fault reported from several angles rather than several problems.
- Test the tones, the light and the display after cancelling — All three should return together. Anything still missing afterwards is a panel fault rather than the mode.
The steps you can do yourself
- Find the Sabbath Mode section in the manual — The entry and exit sequence is model specific, and guessing at key combinations on an oven that is currently hot is not a good use of time.
About 10 min
- Note which functions still work and which do not — Work through each one in turn and write the results down. That map narrows the fault more than the code number can.
About 15 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals or a panel off — That is the line between an owner check and a service call on this circuit.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the oven or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a built-in oven is normally hard-wired, so the breaker is its only disconnect. If your range burns gas and you smell gas: leave the building without switching anything on or off, call the gas utility or emergency services from outside, and do not look for the leak yourself.
Where the owner checks end
This does not need a technician. It is a mode, and cancelling it is a panel operation described in the manual.

What this page does and does not cover
This page reads or 5A7 as Whirlpool documents it for ovens in this range, so it covers the appliance class rather than one model line: a wall oven, a range and a microwave-oven combination can all post it with different hardware behind the panel. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit it is the more specific answer, and it is linked from the code index below.
